I have the Powerflite on my 1955 Plymouth Belvedere V8. It has a cracked housing and leaks really badly although it does run. I'm thinking about swapping it for a 56 Powerflite since the 55 seems so hard to find. I'm wondering if I will be able to adapt my shift linkage from the lever on the dash to what I assume was a push button on the 56 are the are the kick down and throttle levers the same on the valve bodies? I would much rather keep the unique shift lever on the dash.

I was very surprised when you brought your 55 Powerflite issues up a couple of weeks ago that the 55 Powerflites were *NOT* cable shifted, but mechanical link-shifted. Whoever came up with the cable shifter should have at least been "Employee of the Month" and promoted because of the cost savings.

All that said, I think that if your dash shifter has decent detents, it would be possible to develop a bell cranks that translates the movement of that 55 shift lever to the very small movement of the 1956 style shift cable. (The total cable movement at the shifter is only about 1" (or less)). It will require some design and testing.

The other issue will be the Throttle Pressure/Kick down linkage. You wouldn't want to come up with that all on your own. I think what you need is a 1956 Plymouth donor/parts car that has the transmission and all the throttle, etc linkages.

Good luck.

Dave, it would be nice to know what part of the country you live in. I am sure you live a long way from me (Alaska) as I have 2 55 Plymouth parts cars, both with Powerflights.
Have you tried John at Bigm, he has a salvage yard in Ca. with lots of FL cars?

I just sold a 55 Plymouth v8 powerflite parts car to John at big M. It was a low mileage original car
