Can anyone please decode this tag on my 57 Plymouth.?
I think I'm right with the paint code being Jet Black but the other numbers are a mystery..

Thanks, Frank

Hello Frank. Does your car have some (or all) of next items?

Solex Tinted Glass
Rear Quarter Stone Shields
Inside Prismatic Mirror
Cigar Lighter
Glove Box Lock
Back-Up Lights
Windshield Washer
Windshield Wipers with Variable Speed

I’ll try to figure out (and to help you) what the SG4 code on your cowl tag is mean…

BT 6866 is Belvedere 2 Door Hardtop body type with V8 engine (same model with L6 would be numbered 6666)

Hi Igor,
The car does have a tinted band on the windscreen ( is that Solex glass ? ) as well as the prismatic mirror, cigar lighter, glove box lock but only single speed wipers with no washer. No stone shields were fitted when we got the car but I have fitted some. Also no backup lights.

Hello Frank thanks for response.

The SG4 code can be deciphered as Solex Tinted Glass. You definitely don't have these; the band on the windshield doesn't count. Code 124 (SG4) supposed the installation of ALL tinted windows (see attacment). So it's either all glass or nothing. Could the windshield have been replaced by the previous owner?

Also, the SG4 code can be decoded as a Special (Accessory) Group 174. As of 1957, Plymouth had three groups (see attachment). In our case the Group 174 (SG4) included Group 178 and Group 172 both:

Accessory Group 178:
Wheel Covers
Rear Quarter Stone Shields
Inside Prismatic Mirror
Cigar Lighter
Glove Box Lock

Accessory Group 172:
Back-Up Lights
Windshield Washer
Windshield Wipers with Variable Speed – Dual Electric

It looks like your car has a group of 178, but does not have 172. I don't think the previous owner replaced the one-speed windshield wipers with two-speed ones and removed the buck-up lights. The obscurity is also added by the fact that group 178 was used on all series except Belvedere, like yours… it might be standard equipment on the Belvedere series…

I'm confused…

Interesting info there.. It's possible the screen was replaced at some time , the current one does look aged though. There were no stone guards on the car but it has been painted so perhaps never replaced..
