Nice car but I would lose the skirts, the "eye" lids on the headlights, and the blue parking lamp lenses.

Skirts are great, I'd just lose the blue lenses and ride height.

Well, there's a few little details!  The nice thing about this: it's an auction - people will bid what they think it is worth to them.

66 images and not one of the engine bay or underside?  That's a bit disappointing!

yeah who knows that might be an issue with factory hole punches.

I mean unless he replaced the fender with a normal dodge fender and miss drilled the holes for the emblem. that does need fixed though.

Are the tires "tall"? or something? rims/tires look a little off.  Oh those are the "repop" hubcaps I dont care for...

Interior is amazing insde, that cant be original? they dont repop alot of that stuff...  I hate skirts

Bingo ! Also, replacement rockers don't line up. Interior could be one of the sets that Gary Goers reproduced. They were as nice as original. High Quality.

Yeah, and need to see engine, unless there's something they don't want to show.

Definitely looks like the same Goers interior I had. He was putting out some great products if one could handle the waiting time.

None of the undercarriage, but they finally showed images of the engine.  $37,400 seems pretty fair, if not well bought!

Interesting: they say it is a 361, but there are no D500 badges on the car.  It would be great to see the VIN tag, cowl tag, and engine stampings for this one!

If it were mine, I would

  • ditch those fender skirts
  • fix the parking / turn signal lenses
  • fix the fender shields
  • get a real set of wheel covers
  • paint the oil cap black
  • replace the radiator cap
  • try to scare up the rear stainless strip above the bumper (that one could be tough)
  • fix the fin end caps (they look like they are gold or rusty?)
  • paint the front fender black behind the grille bars
  • put on a heater blower gasket
  • ditch the headlight shades
  • replace the tires (that white wall doesn't look like the correct width)
  • peel the extra stickers out of the engine bay
  • get a tar topper battery with the period battery sticker
  • paint or powder coat the rims white
  • buy a dome light lense for the passenger side
  • buy a new set of exhaust deflectors

and enjoy!  All that stuff would be pretty easy and I bet the value of the car would increase to cover all the costs.

I finally got someone at Mecum to send me some pictures today, but nothing showing underneath. The car had an L350 motor, which is what you would expect. Listing said it had a 361, which would have made it a D500 but there was no badging. The car had no trim tag, which worried me that it might not be a real Regal Lancer. I really wanted a Regal Lancer but with Covid I didn't have anyone there I knew to check it out. At the price it went for, you could afford to redo some things.

I'm looking for a 57-59 Dodge coupe, wagon or convertible. For a coupe, looking for good colors or rare engine and would like to find a 59 Custom Royal. Less picky in terms of wagons or convertibles. Would prefer cars that are done but will restore the right project. Cell is 510-414-0926.

no trim tag is a bit of a red flag and the interior is repop right?

So i would say this is a restore/rebody?

Does that vin tag look like a repop? how in the hell would a body tag come off?

I mean vin tags did fall off but a body tag no. All in all I think well bought, the glaring flaws didnt help the price, that paint is pretty bad also, serious orange peel on the repaint.

You'd have to have Ma Stellantis, or whatever they're called now, look up the IBM punch card using the VIN.

Then pay AG Backeast to crank out a new cowl tag.

Cowl tags, especially for the Hamtramck cars, were just fastened on by two phillips head screws.  The LA cars had one-way screws.

I didn't see any images of the VIN!  Just a real far away shot, which does look odd.

That does not look like a 58 Dodge vin plate, should have LD3 on it.

Whoever wrote the text for the sign had no clue what they were talking about.

Not a Royal Regal Lancer. Just a Regal Lancer.

Power windows ?

One of 17 ? Numbers pulled out of thin air.

Swept Wind ?

361 ? Not unless it's a D500, which it isn't.

Also, note the chunk missing from the back of the steering wheel.

And the funky VIN number.

And the missing data plate.

Ron,
I know it's not a Royal, but was the Regal Lancer not a sub series of the Custom Royal? LD3 is Custom Royal, if it's an LD3.
Kind of like the 58 Impala, which was a one year only sub series of the Bel-Air but the name Bel-Air was nowhere to be seen on the car.

I have my doubts this is the original car, vin may have been issued by DMV .

Original vin should start with LD3 as the Regal Lancer is based on a Custom Royal.

The engine has probably been rebuilt, mine is now 361 as pistons could not be found for a 350 so you have to use standard 361 pistons, the number on the block of the 350 is a 361 casting number.

Also the chrome strip between the bumper and trunk lid is missing, there does not seem to be any holes there so the may have been welded up or a Coronet or Royal body was used to build the car?

Joe Mac had around 42 vehicles in his database but I think that included rough ones as well

Heck yeah, those are power windows.  Arm power!  The two-way butt power seat is pretty cool too.  440 a/c included at no extra cost - blows ice cold in the winter.

Looks like a Tennessee issued VIN plate. Likely due to a missing or damaged vin tag. Doesn't change value too much these days, but for us original number-crunchers it's worth noting. Only way to document the car without a VIN is hoping to find a broadcast sheet or have supporting documents that show the old VIN.

Considering the bondo steering wheel and the lack of accompanying docs, I'd say $37k was strong money.

Looks like the bottom item there is the remains of the top corner of the VIN tag. Above it at an angle is the Tennessee VIN that the car wears now. So looks like a damaged or torn VIN tag led to the new title and number.

The only VIN listed by Mecum is: TNVIN212862100103

No mention of any "LD" designation, which combined with the weird shape of the door jamb tags, leads me to believe it's a newly assigned VIN.

Furthermore, all documents I can find show Regal Lancers to be built as Custom Royals, so they'd be LD3 VIN designations.

It may be that someone bought a rusted out, junked Regal Lancer with a missing body tag, and moved all the trim over to a Coronet, Royal or Custom Royal. Then they got a VIN tag issued from the DMV. Probably flipped a few times. Then sold at Mecum.

Probably why the auction header was Royal Regal Lancer, rear fender spears are not Regal ones, should be silver spear and black background around knight.

Awright, so all that said - it may be a "tribute" at this point.  Still a darn cool tribute!

Without the VIN or the cowl tag, this car will always be a mystery.

Regarding all the weirdness of the VIN, as Confucious say:

"Sum ting wong"

Do you suppose that there exists anywhere a list of the 1146 VIN number's issued for the Regal Lancers within the LD3 category?

I don't know that anybody's done it, but it's doable because of the 5 A or X and S paint schemes.  You would expect about 290 of each color combination.

XSX (copper body with white accents)

SXS (white body with copper accents)

ASA (copper body with black accents)

SAS (black body with copper accents)

Hi Mike,

I think Joe Mac, has most of the surviving cars accounted for?

There seems to be quite a few copper and white body cars , but only 2 or 3 black body cars, press photos seem to be either copper or white, wonder if this swayed buyer's in that direction.

so I assume they look the info up on the microfiche... so unless someone would scan and computerize the microfiche were hosed.

I think the museum was using this for a little income and also maybe they are afraid making all those vins available would be used(there isnt enough cars out there though).

Would be nice if Chrysler would hand over those microfiche for a scanning project but I guess that would take commitment (of money) to
scan them.
