New User Posts: 3 | I have a 56 DeSoto. Last year I was planning on redoing the brakes and bearings on all the wheels. I did the front last year and have started on the rears. After disassembling the rear brakes I have come to realize I have no idea how to replace the bearings. The manual says I need special tools to remove and replace the oil seals. Is there any way to jerryrig some tools that will get the job done properly without wrecking anything. I've never done rear bearings before, so I'm a little lost, but I'd like to get it done as long as I have the parts and have one wheel mostly apart. I found one video on this forum but it leaves a lot of information out. The manuals I've looked at also seem somewhat vague. Can anyone help me out? Also, how does one tell how much grease goes in the grease hole?

New User Posts: 3 | Thank you, these are helpful. So the cover on the rear end does not need to be removed to disconnect the axle?

There is no "cover", just the complete gear carrier assembly. So the answer is to your question is no. The axle is not held in by any clips at the differential end.

Seriously, having your pretty wife's face right there while beat the bearing on with a pipe? The ignorance abounds on this one! And then magically the race is in place, LOL

Expert 5K+ Posts: 7805 Location: Williams California | Here are some photos I took when doing my '59 Custom Sierra in 2008. I welded two axle nuts together to use with a common slide hammer to remove the axles, then a threaded seal puller from Snap-On.
