| I'm sure there have been many questions over the years on this topic, so I apologize in advance. Has anyone published a tutorial on doing this conversion? I want to add A/C and a few other modern conveniences to my 1955 Suburban. I understand it will go from a Positive to Negative ground, correct? |

Location: Muskego, WI | On a Plymouth Plaza, it shouldn't be to hard. I'd do 12v with negative ground, you'll need to replace all of your lights, get the appropriate generator (or alternator if you update that too), voltage regulator and distributor. |

Location: So. Cal | The hard part will be getting your gauges and wipers to work. Fortunately for you, they changed everything to 12v one year later so you can swap most of the gauges, blower & wiper motor from a '56 Plymouth over to your car. The Amp meter should work as-is without change, and the oil pressure obviously doesn't need anything either. Finding '56 temperature gauges isn't difficult, but finding a good fuel gauge is a little more challenging. I guess the quick way to do it would be to get a '56 parts car and swap all the electricals over. Use the '56 Plymouth wiring schematic to make sure you wire everything up properly in comparison to your '55 wiring schematic. |

Location: Ponder, TX | I converted a '55 about fifty years ago by swapping parts with a '56. The only issue I had was not realizing that the gas gauge worked, but it worked incorrectly. It read high and was empty when it read about 1/4. Most difficult job was changing the wiper motor, plus the faster turning starter was great and it survived the three or four years I drove the car and as far as I know the buyer never had a problem. |
