I was painting the motor and had the filter canister off for an extended period of time and have since forgotten where the spring goes in the process.

I downloaded the service manual but it shows nothing about the spring....now I'm wondering if the spring is even supposed to be there or got there via someone's idea of an "improvement".

This is the 325 cubic inch POLY. I 318 polys laying around and tried to take them apart to see what I was missing but they are all together different.

I'm also having a hard time finding a replacement filter canister.

I'm not interested in Hot Heads' "spin on conversion". I might do that down the road but right now I don't want to go that route.

darnit...I just want to change my dang oil!!! LOL The last canister filter I bought from the parts store must have been for another application because it was not the same at all. Hell, I'm about to wash out the old filter and put it back after all this trouble.

I haven't checked with Craig yet because I think he mainly deals with brakes and suspension. Might he deal in gaskets and filters too?

Any help would be warmly received!

Thanks,

Wayne

Don't take this as the "gospel", but I don't remember any spring when I removed mine on my 315.

Yep, the oil filter design on an "A" poly 318 is different than the hemi based engines. The Hotheads adapter doesn't work on them, but will work on your 325 poly. The diagram shown by Dave should be all you need.

Thanks guys and sorry for the late reply. I've been burred in work and now the trans I freshed up over the winter is having problems. It worked fine when it finally clicked into gear but now for some reason when in reverse it locked up the entire drive line as if there were a transbrake. I just pulled the valve body and am going to go through it piece by pieces...I'm trying to find the thread I started regarding that project. I figured out the spring thing. I guess I got lucky and did it the way the diagram shows. I was fairly certain that was how it went but got overwhelmed with all the friggin work involved in cleaning up the firewall. All spring I didn't get a single repair call and now that the hoist is tied up the phone's been ringing off the hook!

I really could use any advice on what could be causing the trans to do this....
