Looking through my collection of 1957-58 side saddle air cleaners, I notice similar differences to what is observed with the 300C & '57 Fury air cleaners.

Some of them, both 2bbl and 4bbl, have large round reliefs near the carburetor, and others are more flat, although still ribbed.

Additionally, with the 4bbl air cleaners, those that have the round reliefs in them, also have taller intake sections as well. This is confirmed with 4 different 4bbl air cleaners, 3 with the relief, and 1 without.

I have 3 Dodge side saddle air cleaners, 2 4bbl versions (not shown), and 1 2bbl version (the primer red one at the bottom), and they all have the relief, and both 4bbl versions have the taller intake on them as well. I know the 2bbl one shown in the picture is from my '58 Dodge so it's part number is 1826114 and is the same as the late '57 Dodge & DeSoto 2bbl air cleaners. The question is, how is the early '57 version different? The other Chrysler & DeSoto air cleaners shown are from Ebay or swapmeets so I don't know of their origins.

As far as the part numbers go, the parts book lists these as possibilities:

1730861 2bbl: Early 57 Dodge D66, D67-1, DeSoto S27
1826114 2bbl: Late 57 Dodge D66, D67-1, DeSoto S27, All D70, D71, 58 LD2-L
1826115 4bbl: 57 Dodge D66, D67-1, DeSoto S27, All D70, D71, D67-2, 58 LD2-M
1827380 4bbl: 57 Dodge D500

1730868 2bbl: 57-58 Chrysler Windsor
1827365 2bbl: 57 DeSoto S25
1731607 4bbl: Early 57 DeSoto S26
1827366 4bbl: Late 57 DeSoto S26
1730867 4bbl: Early 57, Late 58 Chrysler, Imp, Early LA Built 58 Chrysler
1739568 4bbl: Late 57, Early 58 Chrysler, Imp, Late LA Built 58 Chrysler, All 58 Imp

1827970 58 Dodge, DeSoto Big Block w-A/C

I can't believe how mixed up the '57-'58 Chryslers are! They were swapping them around like there was no tomorrow. I wish I knew which physical version applied to which part number. Anyone know?

Nathan: The other thing to watch for is the shape of the air cleaner element at the end of the "side saddle". My 56 Dodge D500 4bbl came with a side saddle air cleaner that I knew was wrong for a 56 Dodge. But I thought that because it was on a D500 engine that it must have been originally from a 57 D500 engine. As such, I advertised it here as a 57 D500 air cleaner and sold it too Joe V. in San Diego. After he got it, he informed me that it was not from a 57 D500 because the air filter element was round, not the proper oval. Oops.

In the end, Joe and I agreed to split the difference and I refunded half of what he paid me.

My "D500" air cleaner (which it was not - as I learned later):

The '57 300C Chryslers had three styles of air cleaners during that production year alone. The earliest had a pipe welded in for a neck. These are virtually only on the earliest pilot cars. Second air cleaner assy had a tin neck but had a vibration resonance sound at some RPMs so was redesigned with the "cloverleaf" stamped into the back of the big oval.

Wayne, I think I know what you mean by the cloverleaf design in the housing, but what do you mean by a tin neck? Do you mean thin neck with a flat housing?

Dave, I understand what you are saying, and you are refering to part no 1827380 for the '57 D500. You have pictured a short intake version with a flat (except for ribbing) housing. My question to you is how do you know that the flat housing version is correct for the 1827380 part number? It might have been the tall intake with relief in the housing instead.

I realized that I have a very original & complete '57 New Yorker on my hands now so I can determine which air cleaner is which, at least for them. The cutoff motor number in the parts book is No. NE57-25366, which is very late. My gold '57 New Yorker motor number is NE57-10613 with a build date of Jan 30th, and has the short air inlet without the clearance dent. I suspect that the clearance dent may be intended to provide more clearance for the new AFB carburetor, which has a wider size to it than the WCFB did. Based on this car, we can narrow the part numbers down as follows:

1730867 4bbl: Early 57, Late 58 Chrysler, Imp, Early LA Built 58 Chrysler (SHORT INLET, NO RELIEF)
1739568 4bbl: Late 57, Early 58 Chrysler, Imp, Late LA Built 58 Chrysler, All 58 Imp (TALL INLET w/RELIEF)

The only puzzling thing in my mind is why Detroit would swap back to the early style, late in the year in '58. Doesn't make much sense. Why go back to an obsolete part number? Maybe they found a new stash of them somewhere that they needed to use up?

By the way, no surprise, but this air cleaner has the cloverleaf design on the lid. It is my experience that all the 2bbl Chrysler air cleaners received flat lids, while the 4bbl air cleaners received cloverleaf designs. But I don't have any experience with Saratoga cars to know for sure what they came with, so this is based only on my Windsors & New Yorkers. It's possible that Saratoga 4bbl air cleaners could have come with flat lids as well.
