Hello - i am close to buying a 56 DeSoto but the heater is non functional, and the temp gauge does not work. Does that indicate cooling system problems? Assuming I buy the car and want to rebuild the heater, what is involved, in complexity and cost? I am an amateur and would probably have to send this out to be professionally rebuilt. Any ideas on cost? Any recommendations? I live in NJ.
Thanks for any help you can give.

Congrats on finding this forum and making your first post.

The heater could be at least two issues: the core and the heater valve:

1. Core:

The OE PN is (I think) 1605 274. Shows up in Section 1-48-88 of the 55-58 Mopar Parts Catalog that is referenced from Item 37 in the diagram below. Shouldn't be too tough to have one made.

2. Heater Valve:

The temp gauge is not likely related to the heater. There are two issues: the sender and the gauge:

1. The sender:

2. The gauge:

They can go bad. The 56 Desoto, white-faced temp gauge should be PN 1648 801.

Hiltop Mopar parts lists a new 56 Desoto 1648 801 temp gauge as being available:

Hope that helps.
