Does anyone know if the head bolts on a 318 poly stretch? The reason I ask is I started my car for the first time over the weekend and let it run less than five minutes. I crawled under the car a few hours after I shut it off and noticed a drop of antifreeze on the bottom of the oil pan. The drop had not made it to the floor so it wasn't much. I grabbed my flashlight and just looked everything over really good and I noticed a little bit of antifreeze on the edge of where the block and head meet. I then checked the other side and it was the same. Has anyone else had this problem? I installed all new gaskets in the motor before I put it in including the head gaskets. I torqued everything in sequence, according to the factory service manual. Thanks in advance for any ideas you all might have.

They don’t stretch, but they do require sealant on them as some go into coolant passages. The bolts on newer cars stretch, there are torque sequence and then the bolt needs to be additionally tighten (measured in an angle degree) and you can feel the bolt stretch.

Did you use Copper Coat on the head gaskets?

I also didn't put any sealer n the bolts. I guess I'm going to take the head bolts one at a time and seal them. Thanks for the replies!

I just had a problem like you describe. I had some antifreeze coming out of a place out in the middle of the head, not next to anything. It was an extremely small amount and was leaking through the casting, like a pore in the casting. I had cleaned out my water jackets very good and maybe this helped start the problem, I probed around the leaking spot and the metal was all thick and good. I finally added a small amount of radiator stop leak, which I hated to do, and it stopped the leak. When I say a small amount of stop leak, I mean like maybe 10% of a bottle. I didn't see any other way to fix this leak.

Thanks for the replies guy's. I'm gonna pull valve covers and re-torque the head bolts and give that a try. Chuck, I'm gonna look into the exhaust bolts and see if I can
Find out more about sealing them. Thanks again

Samstrader, stop leak was my first thought because the leak is so small. I also cleaned everything very through, including the water jackets. Mine is not leaking enough to even drip on the floor.

Metal gasket or modern? If bare metal a coat of CopperCoat would be in order. Lay the gasket flat so you don't get any runs.

I used the fel-pro blue gaskets. I have never had a problem with these gaskets sealing on any other engine I have used them on. The coolant is not getting in the cylinders or oil so I'm sure it's only leaking on the outside of the engine. Just really wierd, I have never seen this before.

It could be the exhaust bolts leaking as chuck suggested. I'm gonna dig around on the net and see if I can find out which exhaust bolts I need to be putting sealant on.

I use Permatex fast tac. Crazy question with everything else but did you clean out all the bolts and use a bottoming tap to chase the threads and clean out again? I have found many times residue or gasket or sealants left even after hot tanking.

Stroller, I did clean out every bolt hole in the block before I put the heads and intake on the motor. I found lots of black gunk in almost every hole in the block. I'm gonna get on it first thing in the morning and see what I can find. It has been a 2 year build and I'm dying to drive this car! Does anyone have any idea which exhaust bolts go into the coolant ports? Or should I just coat all of them? Thanks again for all the help!

Ok guys, I'm out here taking out exhaust bolts and sealing them and i noticed I have antifreeze dripping out of my tail pipes in the rear. Could it be from the exhaust bolts or do I have a bigger problem? Thanks

False alarm, it was just condensation.i think I found the problem,I had three studs in the bottom of the manifold and one regular bolt. I believe that bolt was leaking antifreeze. I haven't made it to the passenger side yet but I believe I will find the same issue. I have put thread sealant on the new studs and I hope this will fix my issue.

thats why one should never let a car run for a few minutes and then put it away , condensation . it'll rust/eat the insides of a muffler and pipes in time -------------------------------------------later

True 60 dart, it was coming out after I jacked the car up in the front. I found a valve cover leak on pass side. I think that's what I was seeing on that side. darn antifreeze used to be neon green, now I can't tell the difference between it and clean engine oil. I applied thread sealant to all head bolts (except the three in the middle) and re-torqued them to 85 ft pounds according to my factory manual. I'm gonna let it set and dry tonight and tomorrow I will fill with coolant and give it a try.

Just to complete this thread, the issue is fixed. I filled with coolant and ran it until the thermostat opens and everything seems fine. Thanks for all the help!

I'm glad you got it fixed. I have definitely had the same problem trying to identify fluids. When everything is clean they can look similar. But great news that the problem is fixed and you didn't have to use any stop leak.

Usually, these two parts are sold separately; I have never seen them sold as a set. You can try to buy them on the aftermarket so these parts will cost you less, but I don't think it's worth the risk. When I was repairing my garage, I needed a lot of bolts. I bought them at a reasonable price from this scrooz.com.au online store. I have not regretted it at all as I got awesome bolts that are firmly fixed. In addition, their service life is long.
