I'm looking for a 2-bbl. V8 air cleaner. I don't mind if it needs cosmetic restoration, but I do need one. These seem to be a little tough to come by.

Any leads appreciated.

Thanks.

Would a '56 Plymouth air cleaner be the same?

Assuming that your 1955 Coronet has a V8 then it is likely the 2 bbl single exhaust 270 polyspherical engine, like this one:

Under that assumption, I think that your original 2 bbl carb was likely a STROMBERG WW 3-132 for a 1955 DODGE 270 cu inch poly V8. Like this one:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/REBUILT-STROMBERG-WW-3-132-1955-DODGE-270-V...

The OE V8 air cleaners in 1955 and 1956 were oil bath. The two-barrel air cleaners had a six-point snowflake design on the top and a D-handle on the side for the clamp at the bottom.

The four barrel air cleaners had a smooth top and they were attached to the carb via a 10-24 (or 1/4"?) threaded rod and wing nut.

John at Big M in Williams, California or the boys at French Lake Auto Parts (FLAP) in Minnesota should have something for you.

A 1955 2 bbl V8 air cleaner:

Alternatively, you could find a 1537 723 4 bbl manifold (or an after market Offenhauser from Hot Hemi Heads) and a Carter WCFB 2181S 4bbl which was the power pack for the 270 double rocker ("hemi") in 1955. and go with a 4 bbl air cleaner, either OE from Big M or FLAPs or aftermarket with an inexpensive adapter to 5 1/4" opening.

Not sure. I also need to get a Hollander interchange manual to see what I can/cannot use. I would imagine it would be the same, or at least fit, even if the top was a bit different.

That is exactly what I have. I have considered swapping over to a 4-bbl. if things become tough enough to find that I can't.

On the subject of finding thing....does anyone reproduce the "RED RAM" decals for the valve covers? Mine are pretty well obliterated, and would be once I clean off everything for the cosmetic restoration, anyway.

On the above-subject, is the Plymouth air cleaner at least a functional replacement?

.
In 1955 Plymouth's new V8 wasn't ready so they used a Dodge poly engine so if you can find a 55 Plymouth V8 with 2 bbl, the air cleaner should work on your 55 Dodge 2 bbl.

As for decals, you could purchase a set of SUPER RED RAM decals and just cut off the SUPER (the 2 bbl 270 was not a "Super" Red Ram)

Dave, the '55 Plymouth V8 was the 259 Dodge poly motor.
From the picture, I think my '56 2bbl air cleaner top is the same, but the body may be a little taller than the '55 version. Otherwise, it looks the same.

My dad and I recently picked up a 1956 vintage 270 Poly that was in a pickup truck, we intend to update to a paper filter air cleaner. Not sure if the truck air cleaners were different, but I can get dimensions and pictures if interested.

Filter housing is about 10 inches in diameter and 6 inches tall. Opening for carb is about 2-5/8 inches. There is a very shallow dent on the top by the decal and a hole punched in the bottom where the oil would lay so that would have to be repaired. Let me know if interested.
