Hey there. OK my '60 Plymouth Fury the trunk lid does not seem to want to seem to pull down all the way around when closed. I am getting ready to make a new trunk seal lip, new trunk floor section as well as the right rear drop down. When closed the latch locks solid and when opening it pops up. I don't know if torsion springs are too strong or what.

Any one got any idea how adjust this thing down?

Add Metal shims in front of the Upper Bolt on the hinges. Try with 1/16" thickness.

I'd like to help, but I read the OP several times and it does not make sense to me. You can adjust everyting at the lock (3 Philips screws), striker plate (2 bolts) and the hinges (3 bolts each side). Metal shims?

If the front corners are too high , this is the way I would use...sometimes 1/8" shim..It feels funny to put under upper(rear when lid is closed) bolts but that`s how it works

Again, can someone explain it to me? I never had any adjustment problems that required shims, you can raise or lower the front corners (also the slant of the lid hinges) where the hinge assembly is bolted to the body and at the rear you can also easily adjust up/down left/right? What am I missing?

You're not missing anything Sid, but if you have an otherwise well adjusted trunklid and just want to move it slightly upwards or downwards in the front corners (in relation to the weatherstrip). This is the fastest and easiest way of doing it without affecting the other adjusments.

Here's a photo of my hinges - see the stainless shim - this was needed because the new weatherstrip was somewhat too high.

Thank you. I reckon it makes it sense to move the mounting arm down away from the trunk lid. So to clarify only use shims on the rear or try both to see which deliver the best results? I am not a body tech so this stuff is foreign to me. Tricks of the trade or by a learning experience trial and error.

If you are doing some renovation to the lid or trunk and everything will get new paint, it's better to adjust the hinges as Sid describes. If the adjustment is good and everything already is painted, the cowboy trick with the shims will do the trick.

The position of the shim in my photo will lift the trunk lid slightly. If you need to get the trunk lid down a little, the shim should be placed in the upper postion (upper bolt).

....also the slant of the lid hinges.....

Of course, only the height, not the slant

I'm having to make a new trunk seal lip for the seal to have something to attach to. The gaps all around it are good, the latch is down and tight. But yep the forward part of the trunk lid is up above the body below the rear window. I'm wondering if the torsion springs are too tight or strong, just like the front hood springs. This car was special ordered back in '59 and was factory lightened. Very irritating when I find places the factory didn't do so to say. But yeah when you unlock the trunk lid it pops up about 4 inches. You have push down on the lid to open it.

Every mopar I've ever owned has behaved like that, have to push down on the lid (if ever slightly) to get the trunk to pop open an then it sits about 4 to 6 inches up. My Imperial and both my Plymouth sedans act like this and my '82 Cordoba was the same.

When I installed än Electric trunk lock, the solonoid was too weak to Open the trunk. So I had to adjusting the torsion springs to a lower Force. Now the lid pops up a foot and is still balanced well so it stays in the position I lift it to.
