| Hello
I have a 1956 Windsor with a 331 Poly / Powerflite that has a Generator / Power Steering pump Combo. I would like to switch out the generator for an alternator and put in a power steering pump lower on the engine like it is installed on the 354 Poly.
The car has a strange looking part between the lower radiator and the water pump that has 2 - 1/4" lines that run under the engine which I think is a transmission cooler.
the questions I have are:
Is the part between the radiator and water pump a tranny cooler? if so what I have read says that powerflite trans. are air cooled, do I need to figure out a different trans cooler so I can fit a Power Steering pump in that spot.
and
Will the bracket for the 354 Poly fit? If not any recommendations on what bracket / pump to use would be great.

Location: Muskego, WI | You do indeed have a transmission cooler in place of your lower radiator hose, liquid cooling was fairly common on Chryslers with PF transmissions in '56 (standard on Imperials). The 354 bracket will most likely fit on your 331 as 331 and 354 short blocks were virtually the same (both Hemi and Poly). |

What you have there is an early transmission to water heat exchanger (aka "trans oil cooler") as shown below. I hope you post what your solution is because I am thinking about doing the same thing (moving the PS pump to another location, rather than having it driven off the back of the generator). Once you separate the PS pump from the generator, you can do a alternator in a generator conversion so it looks OE (ish)

Location: Connecticut | Yes. That's a tranny cooler. 55-6 Firedomes were air cooled. Fireflites were water cooled. I don't know the breakdown amongst Chryslers. IMHO, you are buying a bunch of problems by trying to jury rig the power steering pump and tranny cooler. Why do you need to switch to an alternator ? The gen works fine for this car, assuming it's functioning properly. Ron |

Location: Santa Fe Texas | if you still need one, I can make a power steering pump bracket for your engine. I perfected one for a 56 Desoto 330 and it uses a Saginaw pump. Your will need to remove the cooler and switch to a radiator tranny cooler kit. Location: So. Cal | I doubt that the DeSoto mounting points are the same as the later Chrysler. The DeSoto might be more similar to the '51-'54 Chrysler, but not for '55-'58. |
