The models and body codes are from Mike Petersen's book "1955 Dodge - by the Numbers"

The base images are from the 1955 Dodge full-line brochure.

Codes are very similar to the 1956 Codes (or vice versa) except for 1955 the 6 cylinder car codes start with 1 and in 1956 they start with 6. Similarly, in 1955 the 8 cylinder car codes start with 2 and in 1956 they start with 8. For example, in 1955 a 2dr Coronet V8 sedan would be a 212 whereas in 1956 it would be 812. Likewise, a 2 dr V8 Custom Royal hardtop (Lancer) was a 236 in 1955 and an 836 in 1956.

Cool!
Some corrections for Station Wagons (if we are looking at the ’56 models):

CORONET L6

147 = Suburban 2door Station Wagon, 6P
148 = Sierra 4door Station Wagon, 6P
149 = Sierra 4door Station Wagon, 9P

CORONET V8

247 = Suburban 2door Station Wagon, 6P
248 = Sierra 4door Station Wagon, 6P
249 = Sierra 4door Station Wagon, 9P

ROYAL V8

258 = Sierra 4door Station Wagon, 6P
259 = Sierra 4door Station Wagon, 9P

And at the end: LA FEMME had same body type code 236 – as a standard Custom Royal Lancer had…

Sorry Igor. This is all about 1955 Dodges, not 56.

From a different thread Igor said:

frwl - 2021-11-03 12:57 PM Dave, some corrections to your body code interpretation on the picture you posted above:

D56-1 – L6 Engine

117 = Suburban 2door Station Wagon, 6P
118 = Sierra 4door Station Wagon, 6P
119 = Sierra 4door Station Wagon, 9P

D55-1 – V8 Engine

217 = Suburban 2door Station Wagon, 6P
218 = Sierra 4door Station Wagon, 6P
219 = Sierra 4door Station Wagon, 9P

Sorry Igor, I can't see my "error". I have used Mike Petersen's "1955 Dodge by the Numbers" book to determine the model numbers that
I labeled on top of the images from a 1955 brochure. The brochure I used did not show every model that was available so I might have seemed to miss some.

I think that we can agree that, in 1955, if the Body/Model code started with:

1 it was a 6 cylinder car.
2 it was a V8 car.

If the second digit was:

1 then it was Coronet,
2 it was a Royal and
3 it was a Custom Royal.

The third and final digit in the body/model code gave us the actual body type:

2 = 2 dr Post sedan
3 = Convertible (all 2 drs)
5 = 4 dr sedans (there were no 4 dr hardtops in 1955)
6 = 2 dr hardtops
7 = 2 dr wagons
8 = 4 dr wagons with only two bench seats = 6 passenger
9 = 4 dr wagons with two bench seats plus a third smaller rear seat = 9 passenger (but the ones in that third seat must have been kids because it is not full width like the other two seats)

Did I miss something?

The recent thread is about Phil L's 1955 Coronet Sierra 4 dr V8 wagon in which he provided this cowl data tag with the 218 body code (which makes sense based on the above) (I think )
