I have recently acquired (bought) Mike Petersen's "1955 Dodge - By the Numbers" book (372 printed 8.5 x 11 pages). Mike has focused only on 1955 Dodges and most of those built in Detroit. That said, after reviewing the order code information and comparing it to 1956 Dodges that I know of, I have concluded that the 1956 Dodge codes are a very close match to the 1955 Detroit Dodge codes (with some exceptions (notably accessory codes)).

I (with the help of others) have previously compiled information about 1956 Dodge body, paint and trim codes:

Body: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=69565&...

Paint: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=63553&...

Trim: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=65230&...

I also documented a less than 100% reconciliation of the 1955 Dodge accessory codes with 1956 codes:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=73742&...

All that said, over the last few days, I have used Mike Petersen's 1955 Dodge info to interpret six Detroit built 1956 Dodge IBM cards with, I think, good results. Here is one example, using an IBM card that I had previously enhanced with better text where the microfiche version from FCA/Chrysler Historical was less than readable (NOTE: I need to fix the Column 33 Label - it should be "TRANS(mission) HTR (heater) RADIO"):

The example Detroit Dodge card (for a 1956 Dodge Custom Royal 4 dr sedan):

The interpretation:

With reference to the IBM card, going from the left to the right:

Dealer 53864 = Not known, presumably a dealer near Storm Lake, Iowa

Below Dealer = 333 = 3 in the 33 Transmission column = Powerflite . (2 = Overdrive Manual , 1 = manual no overdrive)

Below Dealer = 339 = Nine tube, five push button/preset , Model 910, Electro-Touch Tuning, deluxe radio

Below Dealer 345 = 34 = Power Equipment = 5 = Power Brakes only (348 = Power Steering and Power Brakes)

Order/Item – 008/02 – booking keeping

Below Order/Item = 351 = Accessory Group 1 which I think is Heater/Defroster, Signal Lights, Inside Glare Proof (tilting
rear view mirror) and outside Left mirror

Below Order/Item = 354 = Accessory Group 4 which I think is the Convenience Group which included the Glove box light,
the Parking Brake warning light, back-up lights, the map light, rain deflectors (above the front vent windows), variable
speed windshield wipers and the removable vanity mirror.

Schedule 0105 = Scheduled build/ship date, i.e. January 5th, 1956.

Below 0105 = 357 = Accessory Group 7 – not really sure but it could be the Dodge Appearance Group = two tone deluxe
plastic steering wheel, rear wheel arch stone shields, full wheel covers and extra rear seat foam padding. (or not ??)

15/018 = Region/Sequence Number = no idea at this time

Below 15/018 = 363 = Engine Power Package = 4 bbl and dual exhausts for a "Super-Powered Super Red Ram" 315 cu in polyspherical head engine

Body Code 836 = 8 = V8, 3= Custom Royal , 5 = 4dr Sedan

368 = Rear speaker to go with the Electro-touch tuning radio (with fader knob (outer right knob))

30_ = 30 =Glass and Window-lift code location, no code = non-tinted glass and manual window lifts

38_ = Wheel equipment. Based on photos of the car, in question it has the plainer chrome/polished "387" full wheel discs and I
would have expected the 387 code. However, perhaps the 357 Accessory group 7 is correct since it included those
wheel covers. (386 = the 4 bar spinner type wheel covers)

391 = 39 = Tires and Tubes (??) – as opposed to tubeless?? (See 465 below)

401 = 40 = Mirrors and Wipers, 401 is the inside glare-proof (tiltable) rear view mirror

263 Paint = three tone paint code with Sapphire white roof (and tail light area), Jewel Black upper and Aquamarine lower

423 = Stone Shields. I expected 421 = stone shields or nothing due to Accessory Group 7 but ??? You have stone shields.

542 Trim = Black, white and silver Jacquard cloth, white vinyl and mylar (silver) Custom Royal Sedan trim

Below 542 = 441 = 441 = Miscellaneous Inside Equipment = should be Electric Clock

465 = Tubeless tires = 7.60 x 15 White side wall tires (which is a bit confusing given the 391 code)

Axle = 313, 325 =3.5 = 3.54 = rear axle ratio to go with the 333 Powerflite transmission (I have cards with 4.1 and 4.3 but they also have 332 = manual overdrive transmissions)

495 = 49 = Route, 5 = a common means of transport (I have several 56 Dodge IBM cards with Route 5) but I don’t know
if it is rail or truck

50 to 57 = Destination codes spelling out STORM LK (Lake) in this case

VIN Number = 35062347

Build/Shipped date = 01/04, January 4th, 1956

663 = 66 = Tracer Number (TN) = 3 (??) (Some internal code). I’ve seen that on several other 56 Dodges

That’s all I have for now. Hope that helps. Dave F, July 5, 2020

PS - I have no idea what that column 61 and 62 stuff is all about - if you know please chime in.

PPS - if any one has the secret decoder ring for the 1956 (or 1955) LA built Dodge IBM cards, please post it up

Wow…

So, if a car is equipped with one option, it is printed in column 34x;

341 = Power Steering
342 = Power Seats (confirmed)
344 = Power Windows – all (confirmed)
345 = Power Brakes (confirmed);

If a car is equipped with power steering and brakes together, then this is column 358 in the accessories group: it is 358 and not 348 – this is confirmed by the recently sold Sierra D-500 Wagon equipped with power steering and brakes (column 358) and power seat (column 342). Here is a link:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=67614&...

I specifically pay attention to column 358 because it is stamped and corresponds to column M1 = 8 in the Los Angeles cowl tags (also have M1 = 5 = 355 and M1 = 7 = 357).

The Detroit build sheet shown above has column 345 – power brakes only and accessory group 357 (besides 351 and 354). Looks like the cars with M1 = 7 do not have power steering – column 357 means something else (but on LA cars it is nevertheless stamped).

It only remains to confirm the code 358 (Is it really PS and PB?) and find out what the accessory groups 355, 357 and 359 contain…

Are these cars (M1 = 7 = 357) really equipped with FACTORY power steering?
And what about M1 = 5 = 355?

Owners, respond me…

Igor: You need to start a separate thread in the Fender/VIN tag forum to deal with your Los Angeles plant cowl data tags. I started this thread to deal with the Detroit-built 56 Dodge IBM cards not any kind of cowl tags.

As for owners getting back to you: good luck. I believe the golden Lancer tag (077 paint) owner is dead, the middle blue one is the clone of my car but with A/C and it sold to someone in South Carolina and the last one is Rustyfenders' (Kelly's) tag from his 56 Royal 4dr sedan. I private mailed him some time ago but I didn't get any response.

Don't get me wrong, I want LA cowl tag answers very much but not in this Detroit IBM card thread.

I'm starting a separate thread for those.

Igor: If you look at the bottom of the example annotated 56 Detroit-built IBM card, you will see that columns 33, 35 and 36 have a note below them: "M" = multiple codes are allowed. 34 does not have that designation.

Column 33 covers transmissions, heaters and radios. So one car could have 3 punches in column 33 of its Detroit IBM card

331 = Standard transmission
332 = Overdrive
333 = Powerflite
335 = Custom Conditionaire Heater
336 = manual tuning, no button radio
337 = Airtemp Air Conditioning, Deluxe
338 = 6 tube, 6 button radio
339 = 9 tube, ElectroTouch Tuning radio

Column 34 which does not permit/allow multiple punches is all about pre-determined combinations of power equipment, i.e. brakes, steering and seats

341 = Power steering only
344 = Power Seat, four way
345 = Power Brakes only (like the car in the example IBM card above)
346 = Power Brakes and Power Seat
347 = Power brakes, seat *AND* steering (full meal deal)
348 = Power steering and brakes (no power seat)
349 = Power steering and seat (no power brakes)

Column 35 is for the accessory groups (which we are only guessing at). I have seen 1,4,5,6,7,8 and 9 punches in column 35, usually two but as few as one and as many as four.

Column 36 is a mixed bag:

362 = rear seat foam
363 = Power Pack engine = 4 bbl dual exhaust on a 315 poly = "Super-Powered" Super Red Ram
365 = Plastic (two-tone) steering wheel (as an option on a Coronet or Royal, standard equipment on a Custom Royal)
367 = Big Power Package = I have only seen on Detroit 56 Dodge card with something marked here and it was a D500 car so I would have to guess 367 = D500 engine
368 = Rear Speaker
369 = larger battery than normal

Going back, Column 30 is similar to Column 34 in the sense that only one punch representing a pre-determined combination, in this case, tinted windows and power window lifts (Glass and W-L on the card):

301 = Solex tinted windows
302 = Power windows, front only
303 = Solex windows and power windows (front only) like 1 + 2 = 3!!
304 = Power windows front and rear (not 344 as you suggested above)
305 = Solex glass and Power windows front and rear (like 1 + 4 = 5!!) Scary. Actual logic.

Please don't drag the LA cards or the cowl tags into this thread. It's tough enough just dealing with one topic, i.e. Detroit IBM cards (for 56 Dodges in this example)
