I have rebuilt several later engines but this is my first early hemi. It is a 354 Chrysler. Under the rear bearing cap is a plug to make oil go through the filter rather than straight through the ports. I ordered a new aluminum plug with a round cage and an o ring on it. When I tried to remove the original out of the hole I got a shorter cage, a ball bearing, and left in the hole is a piece that looks like a flat washer with a hole in the middle and it has two tabs that stick up the sides of the hole. The center hole has a dark hard substance in it and I dont know if that is just dried oil or it has a plug of something. I can not get the washer piece to come loose out of the hole. Not knowing what I am doing with this is stopping me from getting too rough with it. Does anyone know is that washer piece just stuck in the hole or is there something holding it? Also is that all there is to it or is there a plug under it? Thanks for the help.

That really helps, the last picture shows the body disc and spring and retainer. I assume that it just slips in the hole? Mine is stuck tight Ill try to make a angle puller rod to go in the center hole. Thank you for the help!!

You can punch it out from the top side via the oil sender hole. Obviously be careful with the oil sender threads, other than that its a straight shot down.
