I tested the charging system on my, 1957 Dodge Royal D 500.
I used a Foxwell battery and charging system tester. The results were hgh output of 15.36 volts with no load.
15.17 volts with loaded ( blower motor on high, and high beams on )
Are these normal readings?

Those are battery boiling voltages. Suggest that the regulator might need attention.

The 57 Dodge Factory Service Manual (FSM) has a section on the Generator and Regulator starting on page 59 in the hardcopy or 60 of 530 in the 57 Dodge FSM pdf document available at MyMopar.com.

would it explain why the volt meter, jumps around, from far left to far right like crazy around at 45 or 50 mph?

Should I just change the regulator?

Sorry but what you see jumping is probably the OE Ammeter. There was no stock Voltmeter. (Personally, I added one)

But yes, in my opinion you want to fix or change your regulator.

Yes, Its an amp meter, not a volt meter.

when shopping for a regulator, 2 series generators come up. GGA or generator series GHM & GHC.

How do I determine which is correct for my car?

I determined from the Shop Manual, I should have a GJC7012a Model Generator, I confirmed that is the generator I have in the car, which is for a non ac car.
The after market regulators are the same unit for both the AC and non AC cars.
Would an adjustment have to be made or is the output the same?

Had the voltage regulator reset to proper voltage and rebuilt original generator. Still had the autolite parts inside of it, was never opened. Thank you all for your advice and help.

Hopefully that didn't hurt your pocket book too badly.

I ended up having my 56 Dodge generator (that drives my PS pump) rebuilt. It was a bit of a nightmare (the armature had to be rewound). But hey, it works now. (With a new old stock regulator)

wow, great place in RI. 3 generations ownership. knew the car, the model etc. Good to still have a few shops like this left!
