Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | I ran across this 392 hemi motor with the word "SAMPLE" cast into its sides. Anyone heard of such a thing before? I would have expected this would not have been used in a production car, but in a show circuit or something like that, but it has NE571652 stamped on it. Maybe it was re-purposed later? https://stlouis.craigslist.org/pts/d/wood-river-for-sale-1957-chrysl... There was discussion on a boat forum where someone found a 1956 354 Hemi with sample cast into the block. Nobody there seemed to have an answer either. https://www.performanceboats.com/v-drives/135234-any-hemi-guys-here....

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9854 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . Wouldn't "SAMPLE" just mean that it is one of the first samples/examples of the new 392 casting? I can't imagine that they jump into production without first trying a few castings out to make sure that there aren't issues. It might even be an test of how stable the casting is/how long it takes to shrink or whatever fresh castings do after they come out of the molds and sit around for a week or so. From my 56 D500 engine number data base, it was always 2 or 3 weeks from the casting date to the engine production date, i.e. there was a lag time. Edited by 56D500boy 2020-05-24 2:37 PM

Expert Posts: 3966 Location: DFW, TX | A complete guess here, but since several of these have turned up, I have to assume there was a specific manufacturing purpose. Maybe they tested the first few castings from a new batch of iron? Or were evaluating core shift or shrinkage during casting, or hardness during machining? Then if it passed the QC checks, it could just be slipped back into the line and finished out as a production engine.

One thing I have to say is in all my years Of doing engine stuff I’ve never come across an engine with such tough iron . I’ve had a broken studs on the last 57 392 Hemi and when drilling out the broken studs you could not wreck the block as the iron was so tough . On fords and chevies they were noth8ng like the wedge motors or the Hemi . When I used to work at Mercedes when I was much younger the old German guys who bought new cars back in the old days told me that pre 1972 engines were left outside to season the blocks for a while before machining , with the Hemi’s being so tough I wondered if they may have done the same , either that or 5hey have a high nickel content in their castings .
