How rare and valuable are roof racks for the 1960 to 1964 wagons? How to they mount to the roof? Do they replace the roof trim (if present on the car) or mount over any existing trim. Any details are appreciated.

Thanks.

One in nice shape is worth something as people like to add them on. According to the accessory catalog, they install "in a matter of minutes". And doesn't require additional reinforcements. They install over the roof ridge and the top trim. I'd assume you'd have to drill through the top trim and some wagons don't have the top trim. I don't know if they use the same holes as the roof trim clips. I have the roof trim off of my wagon as I'm replacing one of the strips and putting new grab handles on the back. Mine doesn't have a rack. Supposedly you couldn't get the roof rack as a factory installed option on the 1960 Chrysler wagons and it would have had to been dealer installed. I don't know if that's 1960 only or other years.

Nick, are you replacing existing grab handles or were yours missing? My car is a driver so I’d be interested in you “old” grab handles if you have some.

Thanks for the roof rack info.

Jon,

That page posted by NicksGarage is the one from the 1960 accessories manual that I was referring too.

Considering the roof rack was a $106.30 option may explain why it's not installed / seen on that many wagons originally

I'm replacing them with NOS ones I got. My old ones are very pitted.

It would be cool to see the installation instructions that came with the rack kit.

Does anyone have pictures of how the rack installs if someone wanted to add one to their car? are the roof moldings cut off and the original holes used for mounting?

Here's an update on the wagon roof rack installation. I was able to gather enough information to put it together. The stainless trim strips on the roof stay in place, no drilling through them. The mounting screws are actually in three of the strips that go across the roof. All of the cross strips are first installed into the side rails with fasteners inside. The ones with the roof mounting holes go in the first, middle and last positions. There are plastic or rubber strips that go over the roof trim and then the roof rack sits over that. Rivet nuts need to be installed in the roof panel where the rack mounts. The rack base is mounted to the roof with sealer on the screws. Then the uprights and upper rail are installed with screws to the lower side rails. The uprights have angled posts and should "lean forward" when installed.

The one thing I don't know for sure is where exactly the rack goes front to back on the roof. I'm looking for measurements from cars that have factory installed roof racks but not finding anything consistent so far.

I'm also trying to determine the codes for the body tag that cover the roof rack and assist handles. From what I've found it is under the "L" on the tag. With L2 being assist handles alone, L3 being roof rack alone and L4 being roof rack and assist handles. If I'm wrong or others can confirm, please let me know.
