Based on a discussion with Suddenlyits1960! about a Craigslist 1961 Newport with air conditioning I am offering my sample of twelve 1961 Chryslers I have owned and how many had factory air conditioning:

0 of 3 Windsors and a Newport

1 of 3 New Yorkers

3 of 6 300-Gs

The air conditioning option cost was $714.25. Newports were $3000, and 300-Gs were $5400.

So, 4 of 12 that I own/owned have air conditioning. It definitely ramps up with more expensive models.

Offhand, I’ve seen/made notes on a couple/three dozen 300-Gs. I’m not organized enough to put out the a/c numbers now but it’s probably more than half.

Where cars were sold definitely affects air conditioning purchase interest. These cars were from different areas of the country. I could get into that.

From what I have seen, cars sold in hotter U.S. states had air much more often than other areas of the country. I've seen Texas and California cars with A/C quite frequently, and also common in Florida cars.

Here in Canada, A/C is very rare in FL cars. In fact, it wasn't until 1959 that you could get A/C in a Chrysler vehicle built in Canada. Prior to that, you could get A/C, if you ordered a car built in the U.S., such as the New Yorker, 300, Chrysler station wagons, or any DeSoto model. Those models weren't built here (cost a lot more $$ too)

For A/C, Chrysler had 16.8% of 1960 models ordered with A/C and 17.6% of 1961 models. For DeSoto it was 10.9% for 1960 and 13.5% of 1961. Both sets of figures are for the U.S. market,

Total number of DeSotos built in Canada for model years 1955-1961 :

1955 - 2,575 - Firedome and Fireflite - only sedans and hardtops. All other models imported
1956 - 2,200 - Fireflite - only sedans and hardtops. Firedome wagons imported.
1957 - All DeSoto Firedome and Fireflite models were imported. No Firesweeps imported. No DeSotos built in Canada for the 1957 model year.
1958 - 1,070 Firedome sedans and hardtops built in Canada. All Fireflite and Adventurer models sold in Canada, but not built in Canada. No Firesweeps imported.
1959 - 1.127 Firedome sedans and hardtops built in Canada. All Fireflite and Adventurer models sold in Canada, but not built in Canada. No Firesweeps imported.
1960 - 2,249 Adventurer sedans and hardtops built in Canada. No Fireflites sold in Canada.
1961 - No Desotos built in Canada or sold in Canada.

I spoke to the original owner of my 1961 Chrysler New Yorker and he said:
"The dealer in Norfolk Virginia didn't have any car with AC in stock, of around 30 in the lot, so I went (as the salesman advice) for the rear aftermarket unit which was virtually identical to the factory. Of course only the rear unit, the front was heater only.
