I had the opportunity and time to dig out and examine the 57 Windsor A-466 cast iron shifter plate/valve body assembly yesterday. This is the one that came in the TF that I bought from Dave S. (finruskw) but was rejected by my transmission rebuilders (because I had a later, cleaner and hopefully better assembly from a 58 TF that I had purchased off eBay).

When examining the 57 Windsor shifter assembly yesterday, I noted that some of the parts are labelled 16.....whereas others are 17.... indicating that they did carry over some parts from the late 1956 introduction of the Torqueflite in the late run Imperials, Chrysler New Yorkers, and 300Bs whereas others were new.

For example, the the transfer plate has a PN of 1632 662 and was used in the 56-57 Chrysler and Imperial (and the 57 Plymouth, Dodge and Desoto) Torqueflites. The transfer plate PN of the one that was installed in my otherwise 57 TF was 1824 324 which was used across the board in the 1958 model run (and perhaps beyond 59? 60?)

The valve body PNs on the 57 Windsor assembly were all 17...The lower one is 1736 229 and rear valve body is 1732 131. I couldn't find the PN on the front valve body/shifter control but I would have guess that it is 1732 133. In contrast, on the 1824 324 plate, the rear valve body was 1824 326 (I can't find the PN on the front one and the lower one doesn't have one that I can see from the photos that I stored off eBay). The NOS valve body that I have in my hand is 1736 229 so definitely a 57 part.

Some (all?) of the valve body cover (end) plates on the 57 Windsor shifter assembly are 16...., again, carry over from the first TFs. They carried on at least into the 1958 TFs.

Side story: I tried playing with the shifter mechanism to watch the spring-loaded detent ball work with the detents in the "rooster comb" but it didn't work. I had to remove the cotter pin holding the detent spring in place (and the spring) and spray in a bunch of MOOVIT to get things moving again before I re-installed the spring and the cotter pin. Then everything worked nice and smoothly. I can see now why the transmission shop rejected that assembly in favour of the 58 assembly).

Some photos and PNs to corroborate the above:

Wow what a batch of terrific information. Armed with that I'm going to get mine out of the transmission and see what I actually have and what is going on. Thank you very much.
