I don't know how I missed this but I had never noticed that some 1960 wagons did not have the grooves in the roof. Turns out early cars had smooth roofs. My wagon was built in May of 1960 so it's pretty late. Per in Sweden has one shipped in November of 1959 with a smooth roof. Would like to narrow down where the cutoff is. If you have a 1960 Dodge, Plymouth or Chrysler wagon, which roof style does it have and what is the scheduled production date and/or shipping date?

I am guessing that the grooves helped strengthen the roof to help eliminate any drumming or thrumming due to wind with the windows opened.

Or not

They are there for a reason. (???)

I would assume the same thing. Especially on a hardtop version. Doesn't seem to matter if it has a roof rack or not so probably just a running production change.

I'll add feedback if someone can tell me how to read the production date.

I'll add feedback if someone can tell me how to read the production date.

Typically the production date is very close to the SCHED(uled) build date or the Shipping Order (SO) number on the data tag.

Here is an example of a 1960 Chrysler data tag that Chrycoman (Bill W.) suggested:

"For the data tag, read left to right, bottom to top :

0921 1288 / 834 / 303 / UT2

S O NUMBER - Shipping Order Number
0921 1288 - where "09 21" is scheduled build date -
September 21 (1959)

BDY - Body - 834 -
8 - Chrysler
3 - New Yorker
4 - 4-door hardtop

TRM - Interior Trim - 303
30 - Upholstery material & style - ??
3 - Colour - Beige, Tan or Brown

PNT - Exterior Paint - UT2
U - Upper colour - Autumn Haze Metallic
T - Lower colour - Daytona Sand
2 - Paint style - 2 tone (roof / body)

Equipment installed -
N - Heater/AC - 1 = 311 - Heater with A/C
T - Radio - 7 = 427 - AM Golden Tone radio with rear speaker
V - Glass - 1 = 441 - Tinted glass - all windows
W - ?? - 3 = ??3 "

1960 Dodge Matador – it is hard to see, but probably no grooves on the roof… (November 18, 1959)
1960 Plymouth Savoy Deluxe Suburban – the grooves are present… (December 21, 1959)

60 Plymouth Deluxe Wagon with grooves: June 03.

Is this correct.... were they in production in early June? Maybe I read it wrong.

June of 1960. They would have been making cars into July before switching over to the 1961 models.

I still haven't been able to find an early 1960 Plymouth wagon. Or at least pictures of one at the right angle to see the roof.

One thing that does come up are the vintage JoHan models for the car. They have smooth roofs and I would assume that they would have matched the real car, at least in the beginning.

Someone even commented on my Facebook post that they thought the models were wrong because they had the smooth roof.

While looking for pictures of Plymouth wagons to see if I could find a smooth roof, I noticed that some of them didn't come with the stainless strips on the ridges of the roof that go down the back.

I have also noticed this on the 1960-61 wagons. Therefore did a little research in both the 1960 and 1961 master parts catalogs.

The long stainless moldings running the length of the roof on station wagons is listed in both catalogs in molding / trim section simply as "MLDG PACKAGE -SUB"

It lists the part numbers which are the SAME for all Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge station wagons.
In addition is shows that the molding package was available on all Chrysler, Plymouth and Dodge wagons with NO model designation or reference.

Always figured that the wagons that had the moldings was based on the model / trim level. This still might be the case as some models may have come with the moldings as "standard" equipment. Based on the info in the parts book its looks as though it could be an "option" on any station wagon model / trim level.

Another interesting note, it seems that the 1962-64 Chrysler and Dodge 880 station wagons ALL have the roof moldings. Of course that will take more investigation to confirm, but that's what has been observed on actual cars and is shown in the original brochures. Will post more details as new info is discovered.

Looks like on the Plymouth wagons for 1960, the Deluxe (base) model didn't have the strips but the Custom and Sport do. I've yet to find a picture of a 1960 Dart wagon without the roof strips.

Someone told me that the roof racks were dealer installed on 1960 wagons? Any insight on that? The Dart, Dodge and Plymouth brochures show roof racks on the wagons but the Chrysler one does not.

BTW, I did find plenty of pictures of 1961 Dodge Dart wagons without the roof strips.
