Veteran Posts: 148 | I had my brake drums powder coated and they came out great. The guy who did them took the springs off, stretched them to allow for a complete coating and they also look fantastic. My issue now is getting the springs back onto the drums. I've tried all the ides I can come up with and am at a loss as to how to make this happen. I know come humbled before the great minds of the FLN and ask your best advice on the best way to reinstall these patience trying springs.

Veteran Posts: 148 | Sure do, Sid. I hate to see rusty brake drums on a classy car. I've done them in the past and never had an issue. The contact surface on the inside was masked before coating. They look fantastic!

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9855 Location: Lower Mainland BC | . I hope you get an answer that works. I asked the same question 3 years ago after I accidentally rolled one off one of my rear drums while painting them with silver high heat brake caliper paint. I tried some of the suggestions that I was given, including using a brake return spring tool (and various prying techniques) but none of them worked for me. The spring is still off. I don't think it makes much difference for normal driving but I would still like to get it back on. I will watch this thread for updates. Edited by 56D500boy 2020-03-03 11:39 AM

Location: Under the X in Texas | The springs are there to dampen (hopefully eliminate) the harmonics (sounds) generated during braking. Other car brands have them also. When they aren't there, if they don't make noise, no big deal. Wouldn't be a problem if they were not removed. I can't conceive of powder coating brake drums for appearance sake. Even with wire wheels since they have very large centers covering most of the drum. With steel disc wheels, certainly not. Now in the '60s, when show cars at rod and customs shows, were displayed with one or two wheel/tires off the car one might be displaying CHROME suspension bits and CHROME brake drums. And those cars were NEVER driven, just statically displayed and trailered.

I'm not aware of any powder coat that can cope with that, since the temperatures during powder coating are usually less than that what can be achieved during braking and I guess it does not help to shed the heat either. But if it worked for your application, great, that is all what matters.

Expert Posts: 1223 Location: Ramona, CA | On my '60 wagon, one front spring was missing and the other one was loose. I guess it lost its tension from being rusty. I'm probably going to just swap the drums out for cleaner ones I have. (drumspring.jpg) Attachments ---------------- drumspring.jpg (116KB - 220 downloads)

Expert Posts: 2519 Location: central Illinois | I considered powder coating my drums but was afraid that would make them retain heat and lead to fading. Instead I blasted them and gave them a light coating of high heat engine paint.

I see and understand the procedure but a) he did struggle with it (so not "piece of cake" and b) the drum is off the car. My drum it still on the car. Which will make the clamping more challenging. But I will try it when I get home (in SoCal at the moment).

I've already put the drums back on the front so I'll be trying to install the springs with the drums on the car. Hopefully they'll go on as easily as the video shows.

Instead I blasted them and gave them a light coating of high heat engine paint. I've powder coated drums on a few vehicles already with no ill effects on the drum, the shoes and the coating holds up great to the heat. Even when drums are painted, they tend to rust. I've always hated that look. My original plan was to use aftermarket wheels - Torq Thrusts - which would allow the drum to show through the wheels, so looking as good as possible is a factor.
