Expert Posts: 1223 Location: Ramona, CA | Recently got the build record for my 1960 Chrysler New Yorker Town & County and for tires it has code 99. A friend's T & C has code 60. Mine is a 3-seat wagon, his is a 2-seat. From what I can find, these are the codes for New Yorker tires. 62 - 9.00 x 14 whitewall Rayon tires 66 - 9.00 x 14 whitewall Nylon tires 69 - 9.00 x 14 Captive Air Tires His '60 New Yorker convertible has code 62. Anyone else with a 1960 New Yorker know their tire codes? I don't know what indication a car with Captive Air tires would have.

Expert Posts: 2309 Location: The Bat Cave, Fairborn, OH | I don't know what you mean by "indication", but a wheel fitted with a captive air spare tire woulld be pretty easy to spot. There would be one tire valve in the rim in the usual place to inflate the outside tire and a special valve in the sidewall of the outside tire wall that you would use to inflate the inner spare, at least that is what i have seen. You would have to use one of those basketball needles to inflate it. I don't think anyone is making those tires new anymore, unless Coker has contracted for a new run to be made with the old moulds. I know what the tires look like, and obviously I don't have any on my car. I was just wondering if there is some indication in the car that it came with them, such as a label in the storage area. I don't have any jacking instructions in my wagon. Not even sure where they stuck them. It came with a spare but not the original jack. I bought a plastic spare tire cover from someone as that wasn't there either. The previous owner who had it from 1972-2015 says it had a spare tire when he got it.

Board Moderator & Exner Expert 10K+ Posts: 13065 Location: Southern Sweden - Sturkö island | Thanks' for confirming that Nick - then 99 and 60 are tire codes. The 99 was often used as special order, in this case I have no clues.

The 99 was often used as special order, in this case I have no clues. I believe my 300F also had 99 as the tire code. I'm wondering if someone didn't want whitewalls if they used 99 for that. My wagon is all black inside and out and was an ordered car. I only know the ownership back to 1972 but the second owner says that he was told when he bought it that the car started out as an executive car and then was owned by a professor in California who drove it back and forth to Indiana. It was sold new at Barish Chrysler-Plymouth at 4th and La Brea in Los Angeles.

Veteran Posts: 139 | Just to shed a bit more light on the subject, many years ago attending Chrysler 300 Club meets, I recall seeing 300F’s wearing their original equipment Blue Streak tires that were also Captive Air. The air valve was a blue dot on the sidewall that used a needle for inflation and I believe it inflated the outer part of the tire, closest to the tread.

The air valve was a blue dot on the sidewall that used a needle for inflation and I believe it inflated the outer part of the tire, closest to the tread. Supposedly the Captive Air tires were only available on 9 passenger wagons but like anything else, if you really wanted something, they'd sell them to you. Below is a factory picture of a Captive Air tire on a 300F in the "flat" state. And also when I was researching newspaper archives for old ads for 300Fs from 1960-70, I saw several early ads that mentioned Captive Air or Double Eagle tires on the cars. Double Eagle was the name of the versions used on Imperials. Here's a good thread on them and includes the instructions on mounting and inflation. Under normal use, you used the regular tire valve but went over the desired pressure and the extra pressure in the inner liner would bleed into the outer tire. http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=55714

Expert Posts: 1223 Location: Ramona, CA | Here's an interesting bit of information I just stumbled on while looking for something else. It has the codes for blackwall tires. 60 being the code for blackwalls on a New Yorker. Still doesn't explain the 99 code on mine. Expert Posts: 1223 Location: Ramona, CA | BTW, the tire code on my 300F is 96 so it had the standard tires. The other car I had that had a code 99 was my 1971 Dodge Charger R/T. It had that code for the spare. I guess it was stuck in my head. The car was a special ordered in Panther Pink. I sold it after 30 years to buy my 300F.

Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | Code 99 means Special Order. In everything - tires, paint, interior trim, etc. Problem is, if you don't have the original order form or the bill of sale for the car when new, there is next to no way to know what they installed on the car on the assembly line.

Expert Posts: 1819 Location: Vancouver, BC | The tire code is two digits in length, with the the first digit for the tire size, and being the third digit of sales code 55x - 1 - 6.00x13 2 - 7.00x14 3 - 7.50x14 4 - 8.20x14 5 - 8.50x14 6 - 9.00x14 7 - 8 - 8.20x14 9 - 7.60x15 / 8.20x14 Due to the fact the number of spaces for tire sizes is limited, you may find tires of different sizes in the "wrong" grouping. The second number of the tire code forms the third digit in sales code 56x. This number is for blackwall or whitewall, nylon or rayon - 0 and 2 are for Rayon tires, 6 for Nylon, and 9 for CaptiveAir (49, 59, 69). So, from what I have for 1960-1961 tire codes (tire codes, and tires, do change from year to year) 10 - 6.50x13 Blackwall, rayon 12 - 6.50x13 whitewall, rayon 20 - 7.00x14 blackwall, rayon 21 - 7.50x14 blackwall, rayon 22 - 7.00x14 whitewall, rayon 23 - 7.50x14 whitewall 24 - 7.00x14 blackwall 26 - 7.00x14 whitewall 30 - 7.50x14 blackwall, rayon 32 - 7.50x14 whitewall, rayon 40 - 8.00x14 blackwall, rayon 42 - 8.00x14 whitewall, rayon 46 - 8.00x14 whitewall, nylon 48 - 8.00x14 blackwall, Captive Air 49 - 8.00x14 whitewall, Captive Air 50 - 8.50x14 blackwall, rayon 52 - 8.50x14 whitewall, rayon 56 - 8.50x14 whitewall, nylon 59 - 8.50x14 whitewall, Captive Air 60 - 9.00x14 blackwall, rayon 62 - 9.00x14 whitewall, rayon 66 - 9.00x14 whitewall, nylon 69 - 9.00x14 whitewall, Captive Air 70 - 8.20x15 blackwall, rayon 72 - 8.20x15 whitewall, rayon 80 - 8.20x14 blackwall, rayon 82 - 8.20x14 whitewall, rayon 92 - 7.60x15 whitewall, rayon 94 - 7.60x15 Bluestreak, nylon 96 - 9.00x14 Bluestreak, nylon (300F) 96 - 8.00x15 Bluestreak, nylon (300G)

Expert Posts: 1223 Location: Ramona, CA | Thanks for that information. I don't have any records for my car other than the build card. I can't imagine what tires someone would special order on it other than blackwalls. And since my friend's wagon has code 60 on it for their blackwalls I'd assume it's something else. What if someone wanted 300F tires on the car? Wouldn't it just get the code 96 for that? My wagon was shipped within 5 days of my 300F.

Expert Posts: 1223 Location: Ramona, CA | My friend who has a '60 Windsor ambulance says that his car has code 99 on the build card for the tires. It started out as a 6-passenger wagon. His car was converted by the Richard Brothers into a Briarien Ambulance. He says he has a letter from Goodyear to Richard Brothers recommending captive air tires for their conversions. Dave looked at his press photos for the ambulances and in at least one he can see the sidewall tire filler indicating Captive Air tires came on them. I'm trying to see if another ambulance owner can get their build card to see if it also has 99 for the tire code.

They got the wagon size tires on the sedan. 999 5 RAYON WSW TUBELESS TIRES 8.50X14 It's interesting that it's typed on the window sticker and no other tire code is listed. The total price is also typed. By the way, the total price is $6.00 under what the numbers above total. I don't know why. Expert Posts: 1223 Location: Ramona, CA | I asked the previous long term owner about the tires on my wagon. He bought it in 1973 and I was curious to see if he remembered anything about them. Of course by 1973 it would have had more than one set of new tires on it. He doesn't remember if the car came with a spare tire but he does remember that it didn't have a jack and they asked the dealer to include one and they did. The car came with an old screw type jack with about 10 feet of folding handle. He said that's what the dealer put in there. I've yet to find a tire label for a wagon and not sure what they would have done on cars with Captive Air tires. Did you get a jack if you had no spare? I'd assume not.

Expert Posts: 1223 Location: Ramona, CA | Here is more Captive Air information I found from Kiplinger's in 1959. https://books.google.com/books?id=iwAEAAAAMBAJ&lpg=PA4&dq=kiplinger'... The original article in July 1959 is a tire guide and an interesting read in itself. In the August issue, they printed a correction. Interestingly, in this correction, the Blue Streak versions were added. Also, this confirms that Captive Air tires were available in blackwalls. What sizes, I don't know. The image below is a combination of pages from the two issues. Here's an update for this quandry with the Captive-Air Blue Streak tires. Turns out that the Blue Streak tires on 300E and 300F cars were Captive-Air capable but did not come standard with the safety shields. Still haven't solved the mystery of the special order tires on my wagon. https://www.chrysler300club.com/tech/bluestreak/300E300FBlueStreakTi...
