What's the general consensus on the correct transmission fluid for a cast iron Torqueflite? I've had people tell me ever transmission fluid on the market. I know type A is what was originally used. The only type A still available seems to be the cheap golden star brand found at the gas station. Any experience with different types and brands appreciated.

I use DexIII/Mercon which I'm pretty sure was recommended on this forum.

Welcome to the board.

There is no agreement on what is "correct", some favor the Dexron/Mercon and others favor Type F. Either will work.

The original spec Type A fluid contained sperm whale oil because of its exceptional lubricity and heat stability. Sperm oil was outlawed in the early seventies so its use ended.

Calling Type A "swill" isn't very informed.
