If I may:

it appears to be built on or around April 16, 1958

Hamtramck, Dodge Main

Dodge, Coronet, Lancer Convertible

Saddle paint scheme: eggshell roof, eggshell lower, poppy red fins & deck (middle)

Coronet black and white interior trim

Torqueflite three-speed automatic

Accessory Group 2: radio, back-up lights, heater/defroster, outside mirror left, inside prismatic mirror

Accessory Group 5 (appearance): optional wheel covers

Accessory Group 6 (safety): power steering, power brakes, padded dashboard, padded visors

Accessory Group 7 (bumper): front bumper spuds, rear bumper guards, stainless steel rear license plate insert

Convertible Top color: black

Solex glass: windshield only

undercoating

*unknown code* (at least to me)

truck delivery

Interestingly, this is not coded as a Spring Special from the factory, although it has the spring color Poppy Red.  I'd expect it to have the 1957 thin trim and late 1958 headlamp doors.
For a Coronet without Accessory Group 4 (appearance), the optional wheel covers may have been either the full wheel covers or the spinners as the hub caps were standard on the Coronet - I am not certain on this point, just speculating.

Very cool car and well optioned!

No worries, David!  Truth be told, I am only a student.  There are a host of great teachers on these forums.  I credit Chris Hullinger, Paul Williams, Greg Leggatt, Matt Dorschug and dozens DOZENS! of others on this site who know much more about 1958 Dodges than I!  Perhaps some of the real experts will chime in on this thread.  I suspect the dealer may have installed the Spring Special wide license plate escutcheon on your car, but that's only my guess.

Fair warning: TRM codes are a little dicey for me.  I suspect your car had the standard Coronet interior (no flashy swoop) and white vinyl bolsters with black Coronet fabric.  I wouldn't put more stock in that than "Mike's Wild @ss Guess."

You can find the interior fabrics here

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=41650&posts=26&start=1

my guess is it would have been 3588

Nicely built car, there’s an older thread on this car. Did you buy this from Buckner? The 4 under 58 is the license plate escutcheon. The CA article that mentioned painted headlight doors was from 1993, and not many of these surviving and no internet then, it’s no wonder that people assumed they were never offered since not all spring color Dodges had painted headlamp doors, though it was advertised in an ad. The late headlamp doors seem to be only used in Hamtramck.

This car isn’t coded for wide Spring trim since it had 57 style on it from new.

Thanks Mike, I’ve learned quite a bit from this forum about 58 Dodges.

Thanks Matt and Mike.
I tend to agree with the above. This car did not get fin caps as original. When David gets the punch card it will be interesting.

Are we certain that the 25th position is related to spring special trim?  The 18th position is normally indicated as a Spring Special.  Did the factory even produce partial Spring Specials?  If they did produce partial Spring Specials, why not put those codes at the 18th position?

Thanks Matt!  Looking at the old post, it did have the custom Coronet interior with the swoop in the mylar on the door panels (and, I suppose, the dip in the middle of the front seat back).  It should be fabric 3594.

I'm going by memory only but here is another thought. The escutcheon plate requires a different trunk lid. The holes in the outer skin are of course different but so is the inner panel. Much different access holes to get at the pins. Spring special trim was available for later production but the trunk lids to accommodate escutcheons were used very early.

Thanks Mike,Matt and Greg. For all your input it Definately has the Swoop in the Door panels ,I Guess now would be the time to order the Door panels and seat Materials from SMS ,I won’t need them for years but that’s ok .I really like the 3594 Seat Material ,It must have Been a Sharp Car new .Its a Shame this Car Probably ran when it was parked in the Newyork Junk yard ,It still came with the original keys Everything under the Hood is untouched and it shows 63,000 miles .It just had years if being Exposed to the Weather ,when I look at a Car like that I wonder what year it was parked.Greg I will have to Compare the under Trunk Structure with that of another 58 I Have.

Yes, Mike, these spring special cars only came with the spring trim that you ordered. Gary Grossitch has an original spring special Dodge for sale now that only has the SS side trim on it. No other special trim came on it - except maybe the grill emblem - can't tell because the grill has been changed.

I’m certain that the 25th position signifies back end spring trim. A 5 there signifies both license plate escutcheon and fin end caps. Yes, they produced partial spring special cars and this is one of them. A 3 under 46 signifies wide side trim and a front grille emblem.

The dealer (if they ordered them) stocked a kit with wide side trim and a front grille emblem for all body styles except wagons of course. I have the parts list and templates for this accessory. The installer would use strip caulk for existing holes not used. This alone with the grille emblem sometimes is an indicator of a dealer installed option, check the tag if Hamtramck built with that accessory.

As for the deck lid, all the later cars (not sure the switch over date) had the holes for the Dodge script moved to the right side, I would imagine that the access holes for the escutcheon would be in the inner trunk stamping.

As apposed to a regular saddle tone car with a license escutcheon and a spring colour??

I don't know! I think you will be in the best position to answer when you get the punch card and we can determine the actual sales code for position 25. We will likely never know what the dealers called that particular option!

Yes, for sure. I think 58 saddle tone with the narrow side mouldings is one of the nicest combinations!!

Always learning things on this site!  Very interesting stuff!  Is there a code for fin end caps only?  That may not have been an available configuration at the factory.

I haven’t seen a 58 Dodge and its data plate with fin end caps and no license plate escutcheon. There’s only a couple I’ve seen that there’s a 4 there, original cars that had license plate escutcheon and no caps.

Chrysler Historical doesn’t know how to decode a Dodge. They will probably list most all option codes as Code N/A.
