So I went to change the points out and I cannot get the old ones out of the distributor. I put some lubricant on them to loosen them up, and it still won't just pull off the pivot point. It looks as if their is some screw or nut or something that is still attached to despite having unscrewed the other one screw that typically holds the points in. What am I missing here or do I need to just pull on the points with a little more elbow grease?

It shouldn't be that hard.

1. Remove the screw that holds the points to the plate.
2. Gently pry up the points off the pivot pin.

The pivot pin is probably the point of resistance; since you're going to replaced the points anyway, don't be afraid to use pliers and twist the assembly while pulling.

So I got the points out, but in the process of doing so I managed to take off this tiny washer and retaining spring off of a point next to where the points were; not related to the points themselves. They keep some sort of clip down next to the advance plate but I don't know what these are on here for or how it relates to the function of the distributor. Anyone could enlighten me on this? Are they necessary to the function of the distributor? If I do have to put it back on (which I am assuming I do) is there some better way then having to put back this incredibly small spring clip and washer?

Hate to tell you but Mother Mopar did not throw random parts into anything without a specific purpose. You're going to have to try to remember where that snap ring and washer came from and re-install them as per factory, otherwise something bad is going to happen (i.e. the distributor will fail to function as required).

These might help:

Mystery Solved.

That spring clip and washer hold the vacuum advance arm to the point plate, as shown below (from my spare distributor):

Yeah, thanks. I did remember were they came from, just not sure what they did. Anyway, I guess I will have to devise a way to put it back on.

The vacuum advance arm has a pin the comes up through the points plate. That pin has a grove in it. To re-install, get the pin through the plate, add the washer and then push the spring clip down over the top of the grooved-pin. It will snap into the groove. Job done.

How exactly do I get that pin through the plate, do I have to remove the distributor from the car?

Oh my. This whole process would have been easier for you if you had removed the distributor from the car.

1. Remove cap (you've already done that)
2. Note where the pointy end of the rotor is pointing.
3. Mark the location of the distributor with tape and a felt marker
4. Remove the hold down bolt at the base of the distributor (and the hold down plate/bracket). Don't lose them.
5. After disconnecting the vacuum line, pull the distributor straight up.
6. Take it to a bench and do what you have to do.
7. Installation is reverse of removal. Make sure that you have the rotor pointed the correct direction as you lower the distributor into the block. Rotate the distributor to the marks you made and tighten it down.
8. Reinstall the rotor and cap, as needed.
9. Start the car and check the timing (as needed).

The vacuum canister is attached to the distributor body with two screws so you could remove it while the distributor is in the car.

Your vacuum canister arm might not have a pin. If it doesn't then the plate to which the points are attached should have a pin. IF that pin it missing, you have problems. Sorry.

Corsair: I now understand that you took the distributor out for further work. (Hope you marked where the rotor was pointing and the relative position of the distributor on the back of the engine *AND* you don't rotate (try the starter) the engine while the distributor is out.)

Without a proper old-school "Sun" type distributor tester, you aren't going to be able do much testing of either the vacuum advance or the mechanical advance. You might be able to use a MitiVac or the like to apply vacuum to the vacuum advance can and see it it actually moves (rotates slightly around the distributor shaft) when the vacuum is applied. If it doesn't you might have a vacuum advance canister issue. (OR you forgot to reconnect the arm from the can to the points plate).

As per the diagram below, the distributor shaft just rotates in some bronze bushings. It does NOT receive oil from the engine. However, you should use a small oil can flip up that little spring loaded lid on the side of the distributor from time to time (including before you put the distributor back in). A lot of folks say use the same oil as you are using in the engine but I imagine that even 3 in 1 is better than nothing.

Before you re-install the distributor back in the engine, clean off the top of the engine where the distributor sits. Avoid dropping *ANYTHING* down that hole including dirt. Clean the mounting bolt and clamp and the clamping surface on the base of the distributor (top and bottom). The photo below of an eBay engine to me is too dirty. Make your's cleaner (solvent on a paper towel will do the job)

Pertronix. No more points. Stock distributor without points inside.
