Since I have had my car running (Nov. 2016), I have been running two Fram plastic housing/paper element fuel filters. I have the OE fuel line and the gas bowl stuff for the carb but I wanted to make sure that the fuel line was clean before I installed the glass bowl and ceramic filter back on the carb. That was likely going to happen soon (next weeks/months). HOWEVER, I met a new guy (to me) (Del S.) on the weekend who has a 56 Dodge with a 315 poly. He put me onto a paper element filter that will replace the ceramic filter element in the Carter glass bowl.

The filter is made/sold by Sierra Marine. The Model number is 18-7784. It comes with new gaskets and a spring. I bought two (one to install and one to have on hand) from a local Marine outfitter (about 15 minutes from me - Wolff Marine - wonderful shop full of all sorts of treasures for other project). Cost me CDN $12.99 each (plus taxes). Cheaper than eBay for me.

Here is some info if you are interested.

(Thanks Del for the lead)

LOL. Finally decided to get real and install the OE Carter Glass bowl fuel filter (with the Sierra Marine 18-7784). Took the fuel system apart and *THEN* tried the Sierra Filter in the glass bowl for the first time. WTH!! It is too tall for the glass bowl. Grrrr...:(

I do have ceramic filters but I thought that I would try the paper Sierra Filter. Now I need to either find a shorter one or forget about it and use one of the ceramic ones that I have.

Did NOT make my day. Car is disabled as a result.

On the upside, the OE fuel line from the fuel pump to the filter is aluminum tubing and I've been polishing it to the point it looks like chrome. BAH-LING

I tried to find a shorter paper filter than the 18-7784 but could not. So I tried loading a 18-7784 into the glass bowl and tightening it down. It crushed/distorted the filter so I stopped and went to plan B, i.e. OE glass bowl with a New In Box ceramic filter that I had picked up off eBay a few years ago.

Removed all the unnecessary rubber hoses and plastic FRAM G2 filters that I had been using and installed the OE filter with new filter element and the OE fuel pump to filter line (aluminum which I polished the other day).

Used a bit of gas line sealant sparingly in appropriate locations. Tightened everything up (using 1/2" flare wrench where needed) and, after a quick double check, I turned the key to START. Fired right up, didn't miss a beat even while the fuel line and filter bowl, etc. were filling. No leaks (so far) Yay

Sorry if I led someone down the Sierra International pathway to nowhere. I really though that it was going to work.

There's never any shame or harm sharing an idea that someone shared with you. Everyone is free to evaluate and use or not use the ideas they find useful. Have a great weekend!

One should make sure it works first, though. Have heard that more than 1 filter isn't a good idea, so 3 probably isn't & considering the problems with fuel pumps...

You can find brand new glass bowl filters on Ebay that use the paper filters, but IMO they look more out of place than just hiding a filter near the pump and omitting the glass filter at the carb.

For '57 Chrysler and Desoto, there are two different height glass filters, one for 2bbl engines and one for 4bbl engines. Not sure about Dodge and Plymouth, but they are likely the same way.

I got suckered by this eBay advert (posted above) and assumed that it would work without problems. Yes, I should have tried it first but I didn't. My bad.

I'm just thankful that people share their experiences and ideas. Those thoughts can provoke the next great breakthrough in whatever is being attempted. Everyone has some level of talent and intelligence to share. How we each build on it is our issue. While tried and true is great, I don't expect anyone else to be my personal R & D department.
