Location: Columbus, OH | I have a correct, but dirty, distributor I plan to put into my 57 Imperial. (The model is IBK-4304) The car currently has a cheap electronic one that has no vacuum advance and I believe it to be the cause of my frequent backfires when the engine is under load.
My question is how do I properly rebuild this distributor? I've seen basic videos on youtube that reference rebuilt kits. Is there a rebuild kit that someone makes for these that will provide all the proper seals to fit this IBK-4304 model?
And any advice on the process I'd welcome hearing about... I have never rebuilt one before, or even messed with a distributor beyond replacing the points with a Pertronix system in a 66. My plan this time is to install a Pertronix as well once I have the distributor rebuilt to the point of new seals and a new vacuum advance I picked up for it as well. |

Location: NorCal | Seals in a distributor? Ain't none. Rebuild usually only involves disassembly, cleaning, new shaft bushings and replacing the points/condenser. |

Not sure if a IBK 4304 is a dual point distributor like the IBK 4301A but if it is, Pertronix probably makes a kit for it.
As for bearings, I think that the bearings should be 1440 349 Upper and 643 906 lower (see below). Searching on "1440349 Distributor bearing" shows up a 1879596 set at HillTop that is supposed to supercede the 1440 349.
