Tony: Good to see that you finally got the resizing thing figured out and were able to post up an image of your 55 Dodge Custom Royal's IBM card.

I really know nothing about 55 Dodges (I know some things about 56 Dodges) but I will see *IF* I can help a bit here.

Your car was scheduled to be built on Nov. 22, 1954 but it was built on Nov. 20 and shipped on Nov. 26th to dealer No. ?1014 (whoever that was) based on order 01025. The Body code 235 is new to me but I can say that a 56 Dodge 4dr sedan was 835 (where 8 = V8, 3 = Custom Royal and 5 = 4 dr sedan) so 235 probably means Custom Royal 4 dr sedan.

Its VIN starting with 34 = it was built in Detroit, not LA (see below)

"01" will mean all "Jewell" black based on this:

Two and three tone 55 Dodges would have a three digit paint code base on this:

I have no clue about 55 Dodge interior trim codes but 434 might be similar to those below.

Your engine as a D553 should mean (I think) that the engine is the 270 cu in 2 bbl "Super Red Ram" hemi as per the photo below. The engine number should be stamped on the block to the driver's side of the oil filler/vent pipe.

I believe that you have to email FCA Historical, specifically Danielle Szostak-Viers at

danielle.szostak@fcagroup.com

I think you have to attach proof of ownership (with the VIN number) to the email.

In the short term, there should be a stamped metal tag on the cowl/firewall under the hood with most of the info you seek. Take a nice clear photo (.jpg not .jpeg) and post it up. Like this one:

Dave, the pictures you shown are spot on with mine as far as the interior color. Also thanks for the understanding on the paint schemes and codes now it makes sense. my car was sanded down and is half primer half bare metal when I saved it (previous owner was going to rat rod it with a sb chevy engine ugg) the door jambs are black so this confirms this. according to the IBM card this car wasn't optioned very much "3" means 2 speed powerflite which I have (the original). the engine was missing so I located an original 270 super red ram hemi (d553) to put back in. one code im interested in finding out is the accessory code "7". also id be interested to see if anybody has a copy of wpc club magazine with the story on the 55 dodge that mike Petersen did. I read in much older threads that he had printed a lot of useful information on this car.

Hello Tony.

1955 Dodge Data Book says that Custom Royal Sedan (body code 235) with Jewell Black Monotone paint (code 01) had two trim combos only: green and black, and no blue – see picture below. I have some photos of trim example that confirmed by firewall tag, that trim code 436 is black – see pictures below also. Therefore, I think, probably your original trim code 434 is green…

About 7 – code 357 in accessory groups same book shows solex glass, windshield washer, electric clock and inside glareproof mirror. Only one accessory group available…

thanks to dave, igor and others ive gotten a pretty good grip in understanding my IBM card codes on my 55 dodge cr 4 door. the car left the factory very basic and not heavily optioned. the last piece of the puzzle im looking for is correct tire size. my IBM code is "463" according to the ross roy data book, the custom royal had a standard tire and three optional tires, (size, blackwall, whitewall). if any one can help out, that would be great. thanks!!!!

Hello Tony (hondaman74) for sharing the picture.
There is only one accessory group was available in each series (according to 1955 Dodge Data Book)
Here picture of the ’55 Coronet Lancer Hardtop Coupe built sheet (Body Code 216) that has equipped with Accessory Group No.1 (Thanks to Dave F.)
So, we know some ’55 Dodge Accessory Group Codes now:
1 = Coronet Accessory Group
7 = Custom Royal Accessory Group
But still don’t know number of Royal Accessory Group (logically located between numbers 1 and 7)…
And number of Accessory Groups combos (for example – if the Coronet equipped with Group 1 + Group 7)…
It might be 8…

Inquiring minds coming back…

What is the position of the cowl tag? I was trying to see if I could find mine, and I can't locate it. I have a 1955 Coronet.

Thanks.

hi Charlie, the trim tag should be on the upper firewall. if your 55 is an early production (may/june 1955 and sooner) it will not have one. will have to request an IBM card from FCA Chrysler

Tony: I was away in California in early March so I missed your post. I just found the thread (again?) this AM while searching for something else.

Since returning from California (just before the 1st lock down) on March 13, 2020, I've obtained a copy of Mike Petersen's "1955 Dodge - by the Numbers" "book" (370 some pages on 8.5 x 11).

So now I am an expert!!!

But seriously, 463 = 3 in the 46th, i.e. tire size, column on your IBM card = 7.10 x 15 4 ply White Side Wall (WSW) tires (according to Mike P)

Mike mentions how the cowl tags were not used before May/June 1955 as you suggested above.

I also used Mike P's info to annotate the 1955 Dodge brochure model images with the body codes:

http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=74414&...

235 shows up as Custom Royal 4 dr sedan, as I had guessed earlier:

Hope this helps
