I sent the very kind Danielle Szostak-Viers at Chrysler Historical an email on Feb 13 asking about the IBM card for my 56 D500. She replied back the same day and was happy to help! She told me it would be up to 4 weeks, but I got it back in 16 days!

The rumor has been confirmed! I am in possession of the third 56 D500 built!!
I'm posting the IBM card and a picture of the cowl tag. This has made my day!

Hope y'all enjoy the pics!
Hunter

Great news. Congrats. Thanks for posting the photos of the card and the tag.

This is what I know:

Based on the Schedule of 12 27 your car was made in December 1955, around the 27th. (The order number is the other numbers). Not sure why the card says Dec. 16, 1955.

The Body code 836 = V8, Custom Royal, 2 dr hardtop, as I have documented here: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=69565&...

The Paint Code 271 = (as far as I can tell) Saphire White roof, Iridescent Charcoal saddle and Oriental Coral lower (just like the 56 Dodge full sized brochure), as I have documented here: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=63553&...

The Trim Code 545 = the Custom Royal black and silver fabric and white vinyl, 2dr hardtop version (542 was the 4dr Sedan version), as I have documented here: http://www.forwardlook.net/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=65230&...

Engine Number D500-1003. 3rd D500 engine made. Congrats. Makes sense based on the build date

Your car sounds like a clone of the D500 Custom Royal Hardtop that was in the Chrysler Historical Museum:

I love that Charcoal color! Mine was repainted a two-tone Red and White. It looks great even if it's not original.
It's hard to make out on the scan, above the Dec 16 1955 date stamp, it says "Date Built". On the top line, where it's printed 12 27, under it says "Shipping". So, it was built on the 15th, and shipped out on the 27th? The controversy continues! Hahaha!

That is a pretty special car, dude. I think you could make the case that you have the keys to the earliest known Dodge muscle car. Seriously. Does anyone know if the first or second D500s still exist?

I suspect the dates are a little funny because it was likely built and carefully tracked for Dodge's management and engineering departments. Dodge officially announced the D500 model to the public on Dec 22. Your car was already built by then. (!)

It was assembled on Friday 12/16, the model was announced the following week on 12/22, and your car was put on a transporter and shipped out on the following Tuesday 12/27. That timeline doesn't raise any red flags to me.

Agree. However, I am a bit confused as to what to think about how the previous owner(s) (not 56 Royal 500) changed the paint scheme and redid the interior. Looks good but not OE which the 3rd D500 built might deserve.

What it should be (with a 271 paint code), i.e.: Sapphire White roof, iridescent charcoal poly. saddle and oriental coral lower.

What it is now:

What the interior should be (with a 545 trim code):

What is now:

The existing is very nice, no question. Just not OE. Not sure how that would affect the value of the car as D500-1003.

Hunter: Here is a more exact example of the 271 paint code on a 56 Custom Royal Lancer. In this case, a D500 twin of what your car would have looked like when it left the factory:

On the other hand, I found a 56 D500 with the colour scheme like yours (but I don't think that it's yours - the air cleaner and fender liners are different colours than yours)

Thanks for the pictures, Dave!

Per your request, here are some pics of the engine. I did add the chrome air cleaner with paper element because the oil bath one is
restrictive and not as effective. The 4bbl sounds better with the paper element, too!

I really like the Iridescent Charcoal over Oriental Coral! That is beautiful!

I agree this car should wear it's original colors! It looks great like it is, though! Guess I will keep it this way.

Why it was done in Red & White is only known to the previous owner. He is an elderly gent in failing health and I have no way to
contact him.

So, it's history will remain a mystery.

According to Chrysler's records, it was sold new in Klamath Falls, Oregon to Cunningham & Rickey Motors.

If you are going to run the chrome and paper air cleaner, you might want to add the sticker that I made for mine (I can email you the file, you just get it colour laser printed on vinyl (and then trim it) and apply)

Looks like I got the same air cleaner as you, Dave! I love that decal you made for it! I would love to have one for mine! Please send the file!
