Member Posts: 38 | I have two intake manifolds with the same part numbers (one has a "1" casting number, the other has a "2"). They have different ports tapped into them and I was wondering if they could be identified based on those features. I circled or pointed to the differences in the photos below. Thanks for any input.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9900 Location: Lower Mainland BC | Normally a casting number is not the same as a part number so I was a bit surprised that 1731 703 shows up as a 57-58 Chrysler and Imperial Intake manifold as shown below: (57-58ChryslerAndImperial_1731703_IntakeManifoldApplications.jpg) (57-58ChryslerAndImperialModelDesignations.jpg) Attachments ---------------- 57-58ChryslerAndImperial_1731703_IntakeManifoldApplications.jpg (188KB - 141 downloads) 57-58ChryslerAndImperialModelDesignations.jpg (108KB - 139 downloads)

Member Posts: 38 | Maybe I misspoke. My understanding is that the 1731703 is the part number and the digit proceeding the pn is the casting ID or mold ID. 1731703-1 (red intake above) vs 1731703-2 (silver intake above).

Location: Under the X in Texas | The "dash 1" and "dash 2" and sometimes also 3 simply indicate three different molds used to make the identical part. The "dash" is used in case something goes wrong with the mold during production, or a number of warranty claims show up from the same mold like a pinhole or stress crack in the casting. This includes exhaust manifolds, engine blocks, etc. etc.

Member Posts: 38 | They are the same part numbers... but have different ports tapped into them. I am wondering if those port locations suggest different applications. Looks like vacuum port on the center boss under the carb on the red one, but not on the silver one. Then, a sending unit and plug on the one corner of the silver one, and just one tapped port in the same location on the red one. In other words, the two started out the same but were modified for specific applications, apparently.

Expert Posts: 3776 Location: NorCal | My recollection is that the dash number (Core Casting Index Number) is the number of components that were replaced in the casting core used to make the sand mold.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9664 Location: So. Cal | The silver intake is a later version that is used in late '57-'58 for the AFB carburetor and includes an additional port for the ignition vacuum switch. The red one is an earlier intake that was used with the WCFB carburetor and doesn't have the extra vacuum switch port. This was likely used on '56 and '57 without power brakes.
