It has been suggested to me that the addition of an Overdrive unit to this transmission would improve mileage and lessen engine wear. Does this make sense to do?

George: That is a good theory but I think that in practical terms, it is not likely to be easy or cheap for a 56 Dodge Powerflite. There were overdrive units for the 56 Dodge 3 spd standard transmssions but based on the diagrams below, there are a lot of parts involved. I don't know if you could add an standard trans overdrive to the back of a Powerflite.

Location: NorCal		Adding an OD to the rear of a Powerflite is possible if you have access to lots of machine tools and an OD unit, not practical otherwise. Here's an OD conversion I did for a 727.
