My 57 New Yorker has AC unit under the hood..Its a monster, very heavy....I've never had AC working in the car, but the belts go to it and it spins. I've seen some photos of Forward Look interiors and there is a additional unit hanging from the dash below where my heater/cooler unit is....Are these aftermarket AC units or is my car actually missing the unit? My car came stock with AC so i dont know if I'm missing something or not...

I think that is OE Stock A/C controls, based on Figure 31 in Section XVII the 1958 Chrysler FSM (the 57 FSM is also available at :

http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=109

Download, save and open.)

And this:

An after market A/C unit would be mounted below the dash self contained with the exception to the compressor. It seems your car has the compressor, at least if it has belt going to it. Now that being a '57 do not expect the A/C to come on a blow cold air, if it did it would be astonishing to say the least. More than likely the clutch is toast, the hose are hard and brittle and the system is discharged and water might be in the compressor oil. You say the compressor is there does it have the A/C lines going to the firewall? Not a big deal if everything is there to rebuild. Have the lines redone, rebuild or have the compressor rebuilt, all new gaskets, o-rings and seals, new reciever dryer and have the condensor and evaporator flushed and pressure tested. It would adviseable to convert to R-134 since R-12 is so expensive now.
After over haul, a few hundered or more dollars later, it needs to be evacuated and held at 40 k's below 0 for 1/2 hour then recharged and checked for leaks and operation. Be a great time to pull the heater core and have it tanked and checked and recored or replace.
