Location: lafayette,La.		I have a 1958 Saratoga and I feel sure one of the springs on my push button transmission unit is very weak. I wanted to know how to change it and how difficult is it to replace? Thanks Jerry

As for your shifter, I strongly suggest that you go to this website:

http://www.mymopar.com/index.php?pid=109

Find the 1958 Chrysler and Imperial service manual and download and save it (It will go into your Download Directory). When it is finished downloading, open it up and save it in the directory of your choice.

While it is open go to Section XI - transmission (starts at page 262/504) and page down to page 296/504 where there is a specific section on "Servicing the Gearshift Control Unit".

Beware of the need to disconnect the battery before going in there. (Because of the back-up light and starter switches)

Did you not see that?

If not, download the manual and go to Section XI. There are some hints on page 268 of 504. Also page 629/1268 of the 55_58 Mopar Parts Catalog pdf also at MyMopar.com. The PN for the springs seems to be 1639 970. A quick eBay search on "1639970 spring" turns up a package of 5 for sale:

Location: lafayette,La.		Well I got it fixed and it was not the springs. The bottom piece that screw into the push button bracket had the wrong screw on the back side and it was causing the D button not to fully return. So I have a set of spring if there is any interest. Thanks Jerry

Location: northern germany		So far, I 've never heard about a failing push button unit. Even when the return springs break, it still works. It is a very good design.
