Extreme Veteran Posts: 395 Location: upstate new york | Hey forward Lookers, What method have others used to bring a pitted trim pieces back to looking decent? for example: the chrome trim piece around the taillights..mine was once chrome and smooth, now its pitted and bumpy. Since you cant go to your local NAPA dealer and replace these type of parts, what do others do to restore them and bring back to life? sand them down smooth and replate??? Does Chrome paint work? Just wondering what other folks have done. billy

Expert Posts: 1207 Location: Ponder, TX | Pot metal is expensive to repair and have replated because of extensive labor time. I repaired a pair of wiper bezels myself, just to see what was involved. I used a Dremel tool with a small burr to dig the corrosion out of all the holes and pits. That took many hours. Then I filled the holes with Muggy Weld, reshaped, sanded and polished for several more hours before taking them in to be replated. Many plating shops will not plate pot metal that was not repaired by them, but my shop was willing to do so. Here is a picture of the condition when I gave them to the plating shop, and one of the finished product. I don't recall the price, but the before and after estimate was substantial and worth my time, but my time is free. Expert 5K+ Posts: 5006 | what part? How about a picture? You best bet is …. 1 is it a rare part? If a 4 door part, hope Big M has it in good shape... If not you can get these things repaired if its not "too bad". If bad, costs even more. Check out craigslist, ebay, facebook. Chrome paint does work but only one painter is viable so far(Cosmichrome), they supposudly have a "nickle blue tint chrome paint" that mimicks "real chrome" and not the "silver aluminum chrome" look. Call up Cosmichrome and find a local painter. https://goldtouchinc.com/ I have personally used them and the results were amazing. I spent 80$ for each fiberglass Plymouth fender wing. he put 5 coats of clear on it also.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8443 Location: Perth Australia | You can sand it, all the pits have to be cleaned out (drilled) and filled before it can be plated or painted If replating, the pits have to be filled with something that conducts electricity If painting, any filler will do As said above, if the parts not to pricey, try and find better ones, pot metal is a curse

Expert 5K+ Posts: 5006 | I would maybe look for a better starting piece. Remember these tail lights were on all57 Chryslers. I have seen many better quality for sale before. this whole unit sold for 200$ and it doesnt look like it needs any real repair. https://www.ebay.com/itm/1957-Chrysler-Tail-Lights-Right-and-Left-16...
