I would venture a guess that 1 DDD = single colour, navy blue

TRN =TRM? = Trim (not sure what 250 is)

Schedule A = Australia (?), 12 04 = December 4th, 1957

61565 = the order number

I didn't think any of the ckd cars carried that tag, but I don't know everything

These were the only tags on my 60 dodge and your right, its hard to find out anything about them.

I think Ray Bell has a lot of literature about Australian built cars, but its nothing like the build info you can get
on the US built cars. I still know almost nothing about my old dodge. I think it was built black and was the upper model of the 2 models, but that's it

These are all the tags off mine, and I thought your would have been about the same

Can anyone decode a vin tag for me?

What is on the tag? And the make and year of the car, if you know it.

Then 2 rows of numbers above that, then top left is
666 66666677777777 7 ? 5
123 45678901234567 8 9 3

It is possible that the Harden and Johnston tag had been changed, but those tags above all came off the same car

I wouldn't put my right arm on it, but I believe there were no badged senaca's here, but I believe they did offer the phoenix in a high and low level

The Berg tag stands for Berger paints and is the paint code, that particular one, I believe to be black based on what I found during paint removal

Simca badged cars were made in Aus Adelaide around 59-63'ish. As well as a bigger v8 car they also made a smaller station wagon around 60-61 only for sale in Aus..

The V8 model was the Vedette with the small flathead Ford V8. Simca shipped the tooling to Brazil in 1963 and the engine gained hemi heads in 1967, the same year the Vedette was redesigned. Chrysler can claim to have built the last flathead Ford V8 engine.

Chrysler Brazil was sold to Ford the they built Vedettes into the 1970's. The small 4 cylinder sedan was called the Aronde P60 and was also the base for the station wagon.

Thanks for the info on the lower priced Phoenix. Never run across that before.

I used the "Seneca" as it was the name used in North America and most export markets for the bottom line Dart. "L" was also for the base DeSoto Diplomat series.

The low line is easy to tell under the bonnet as there is no huge hole for the heater in the firewall

My one above came with factory (Australian) heater (Mopar truck heater) and power steering. The power steering was mostly gone, but it is really
power assist, basically the same as the early ford style with the ram assist

Thanks for the info on Harden & Johnston Ltd as well as the the ad for T J Richards.

I had come across that 1969 Dodge ad during a Google search a short while ago. Wondered where it was from. There is a pass through the Rocky Mountains in Canada - down at the south end - called Crowsnest Pass. And the "town" on the Alberta side in the pass is called Crowsnest (one word). I say "town" as the place is on some maps but there is nothing there any more. It was a section town on the C.P.R. line through the pass but there are no buildings there now and the station is long gone. Definitely not big enough for a Dodge dealer, and Crowsnest, Alberta, had two roads - Highway 3 (go west and you land up in Vancouver) and a small road that used to lead to the railway station.

Just 13,074 kilometres away from Crows Nest, N.S.W.

Googled 521 Pacific Highway, Crows Nest, NSW and it is a hole in the ground now (2017). In 2007 it was a Mitsubishi dealer, then Chatswood Toyota in January 2013 and vacant in June. 2013.

Soooooo..............Chromegirl.............was anyone able to help you decode your '58 Aussie Dodge at all ???

It looks like there might be some Australia only numbers in part of your numbers so maybe that might be why you haven't got any answers yet ?

I would guess the " Body 363 " might be an Australian number as ( from memory ) there were less than approx 500 or so built down here ( or thereabouts ? )

Unless someone here down under has access to this info?

I have a build sheet that I found under the rear seat of my US built 59 Dodge in among the seat springs . Obviously had been sitting there since it was built. Another spot to look where they are often found is under/on top of ( or stuck to ) the glove compartment liner so have a look in and around the interior of your car just in case a message-in-a-bottle awaits you ?

Hope that is of some help to you ?

The 1204 6456 is the Shipping Order Number where 1204 is the Scheduled Build Date - December 4, 1957. The 6456 consists of the make/series (6) and the daily sequence number - 456.

363 -
3 - Dodge
6 - Custom Royal
3 - 4 door sedan

1DDD - as someone already pointed out, the "1" is for monotone paint scheme (car all one colour), DDD - Midnight Blue

Trim - 250 - I have no info on 1950's trim codes

As for the rest, the sales codes which were three digits. The first two digits were stamped into the tag with the third number being entered for the sales codes ordered for the car.

The attached tag is for a 1957 Imperial, but it is laid similar to the 1958. You will notice that there is a "9" under the "34". The is sales code 349, for dual headlamps.

There is a "26" with a "1" under it, for "261" - Ship car by rail.

So, if you could please tell me just the numbers used as sales codes - the vertical groups with three numbers to create a sales code. And then we can take it from there.

Thanks,

So..... after much googling.....i find that code 592 was for export cars, meant they came with a tubeless tire repair kit.

Also... a capital A in the far left bottom..... what would that be for?

I don't know what 233 is. 312 is accessory group 2 = radio, heater, left outside mirror, backup lights and interior glare proof mirror. 501 is undercoating and 592 is the tubeless tire repair kit!

I'm jumping for joy. Even though my 58 Dodge Custom royal has a filled in US tag under bonnet, and no AUS tag, I have just managed to decode it completely. Yes. Thanks Laurie......

ITs VIN says its a CKD car with torqueflite, power brakes and undercoat.

But, it's still got lots of odd things. Has Herculite glass not solex, has US number plate hole (doesn't fit an Australian number plate in it), Midnight Blue paint (was told Midnight Blue was never painted here in Australia), US vin tag filled in.

all in all...you guys ROCK. Thanks for the help.
