When the car is cold, it runs great, as soon as it warms up after maybe 5 minutes of driving, it begins to have some issues on acceleration. For instance if you accelerate quickly it might make a loud clunk noise, the gas pedal resistance gives way for a second and the car loses power, then it sticks back and you keep going. Feels almost like the transmission is slipping. Maybe possibly slipping when it needs to shift, not sure. It sometimes happens on normal acceleration too, not if you are gunning it, and sometimes once, twice, and rarely three times during the acceleration cycle. Never happens above 45 mph.

And also when it's warmed up, it feels like it's in a higher gear than it should be as you sometimes need to rev the engine pretty high to get it to go... it's definitely not in first gear. From a stop, it will start with plenty of power, then seems to give out around 25 to 30 mph until you get around 40 to 45 and then it picks up a bit. Seems like it's switching into that higher gear too soon. It only acts this way if it doesn't slip with the clunk noise as mentioned above. And both of these issues are only once it is warm.

The previous owner had the transmission rebuilt about 15 years ago according to the paperwork I have with the car, so I'm wondering if they've done something wrong or maybe it's a simple fix, hoping someone here can provide some ideas based on my highly technical descriptions above.

More info...
This car has a few extra radiators. One for AC (which isn't used) and another small one that is sandwiched between the AC rad and main engine rad. I believe that small middle one is hooked up to the transmission.

From reading other threads here, it sounds like that is not stock as the transmission was air cooled originally. If that's the case, then I assume the original trans was likely never rebuilt and instead replaced. Any way I can find out for sure? What should I look for?

Here's two pictures, one of the trans from the underside from when I installed the new starter, and another from before the starter was installed that shows a different angle for of the transmission, in case this provides any indication.

Thanks. Do you know if they are water cooled with a separate rad or if they should tie into the main rad?

Yes, at lower area of the main radiator. But often the internal parts do not age well ! So you can find an external radiator to replace the original.

well the transmission is "oil cooled"

But the stock oil cooler lines run into the bottom of the radiator.

You can see the two line on your running to the left of the block so it looks like you have the correct oil cooled trans.

you can see my two lines I cut off my hemi trans

Ok now I'm not so sure on this. What I thought was a transmission slip may be something with the carb, but how can I tell for sure? When in the car it does make a pop, and I can feel the gas pedal give way when it happens. My understanding is that the pedal is connected to both the carb and trans, so I assume this could be either. The pop noise seems to come more from the engine area and not the trans, but they are so close, it's hard to be sure.

Is there some trick to know for sure, short of tracking down an expert to investigate?
