Rotisserie restoration by the Master of DeSotos; Bob Schmidt. Factory colors are Plum and Lavender which is most likely the most striking color combination ever and exclusive to 1956. The convertible top is also Plum in color. Everything is new or professionally restored/rebuilt to new - like power brake unit, power steering unit, and steering wheel for examples. Extremely rare factory record player and factory "DeSotomatic" steering wheel clock are present. Engine and transmission are rebuilt to factory specs. Engine is a dual quad 330 CID HEMI and is complete with the "Batwing" air cleaner. No miles on the car since the restoration - it's "brand new".

Please feel free to ask questions. Asking $165,000.

The attached article is from Hemmings Classic Car February 2019 issue. It's no wonder this '56 DeSoto Fireflite was selected for this feature article as it's undoubtedly the best there was at the autction. Earlier it was reported the car sold for $110,000.00 but the article indicates $121,000.00 which probably includes the buyers fee. Too bad it didn't bring more than it did but like they say: "It's only worth what one is willing to pay".

Mecum always brings lower prices... Crazy to put high end cars through that "used car lot owner" auction.

The high end guys go to Barrett Jackson, much higher caliber of cars. Mecum is more about quantity than quality, of course good cars like this one do end up there, much to the owners pain in their wallets.

Truer words were never spoken. I guess since Smitty moved to Wisconsin, he thought Barrett-Jackson in Arizona was too far. He may have learned a lesson from this experience though.

Where did Bob Schmidt move to in Wisconsin, and is he still restoring cars? What is his user name on this site?

I disagree. Gerrads collection went for big money. The problem with this 56 was expectation. One time a 56 went for huge numbers. It wasn’t the norm, it was an outlier. Three of these were built in almost identical combos. It’s a unique color to begin with, having three of them out there, Ames it harder to find a buyer. Nothing in the market suggested this car to be 175+. 56’s don’t bring the money like 57-61. The buyer being in at 125 is appropriate for the car and that doesn’t take away from the quality of the restoration, which was amazing.

Barrett has deals all the time. I got a fully done 57 adventurer convertible for the same money as this car.

Bob moved his business to the Appleton area and is still restoring cars. He is not on this website but can be contacted by phone 417-699-1063 and his email is finsandtin@hotmail.com.

Hope this helps.
