Hey Forward Lookers,
Is there only 8 nuts bolting the front seat to the floor? I don't have a lift, so what i can see is 4 studs and nuts coming thru the floor on each side...Are there more in the center of the car?
Thanks folks,
billy

So. I'm messing with the power seat today, cleaning out years of junk from under the seat and blowing out the deteriorating seat dust and spraying the track and racks to try and get it freed up. Got some movement up, down and tilt....does not want to go forward and backward. Then after awhile of pushing the power buttons, a faint puff of smoke came out of the switch and now only 2 of the 3 buttons are groaning/working....since we do not have fuses as far as I know, does this mean I fried the switch? Can it be repaired? Any help would be appreciated. My plan was to pull the seat and get it reupholstered this winter , but now the seat is too far forward for my fat ass to fit in it. I can get in but its tight...help guys,,,how do I fix this?

You need to gather up all that smoke and put it back into the switch. These switches are very repairable. You probably melted or burnt a connection. Take the switch apart and clean it up to see what you have. A guy in Canada makes some really nice replacement switches that I highly recommend to avoid the ancient cardboard that these are made from. He sells them on ebay, but (just a warning) they aren't cheap. But once you get it working, don't just force the motor to push against the hard stoppages. You need to take the tracks apart and really clean & lube them before you start applying power to the motor.

Nathan,
Do you have a name of the Canadian guy? I did a quick search and could not find. Safe to say the best way to dis=assemble and clean up is to remove the seat from the car? Wish i could put the smoke back.....:)
Thanks,
billy

I believe it was camer.mikov, but it has been too long now so I don't remember. I don't see any for sale now. Definitely remove the seat and the tracks to get them working properly.

Weii, i took it apart and as you can see by picture, i"ve definitely smoked part of it...looks fairly easy to repair although the spring mechanisms can be a chore to align...

The main feed to the power seat should be going thru a circuit breaker behind the kick panel on the driver's side. That's to prevent damage to the motor and switch.

You should not try to force the seat. If it's binding, remove the seat from the power assembly and clean thoroughly. Then test the assembly.

Circuit boards ? It's a six-way switch. No circuit boards involved, IIRC.

You could bridge the gaps with solder braid...it's copper, and wide/flat like the "trace". The switch may look like a circuit board a bit, but the reality is that the repair needs to be heavier than the thin, glue-on repair kits that are used to repair modern circuit boards.

You can hook the wires together if you have no switch. Here's the skinny:

Here are some links that might be helpful too. The first one contains the seat wiring diagram from above.

You're welcome. I had the seat out of the car and had a 12 volt battery to test it. I cleaned it up and lubed it then operated it in all directions to bring it back to life. Once I did that I hooked up the switch and it all worked. Put it back in and all is well but am getting a little shock when I operate the switch. Investigating that now.

Did you bolt it down somehow while servicing it?

I have the front bucket power seats out of a 73 New Yorker convertible. I have a similar issue. As I'm about to have the interior done, it appears that the seat will have to be removed from the power framework. That bugger weighs a ton. Nearly gave myself a hernia getting it in.
My plan involves removing the seat from the power frame so the upholstery guy can cover it. Mine only has 4 studs per seat & a little metal massage was required to get the passenger side to sit flat on the floor. I plan to investigate the switches as mine will not tilt down in the back. Thanks for the wiring diagram. I'm sure it will come in handy.

Later.

I did not. Just had it on the garage floor.

So i have the interior out of my 57 New Yorker...driving it around sitting on a milk crate currently...I have the power seat mechanism out and i have the schematics to connect wires and get it to move some...some directions work, some do not...it looks like some of it is rusted together...whats the next step in getting this thing apart so i can clean it all up and get it working again??? I have the whole thing out and on a table, but not sure how it comes apart...anyone have power seat disassembly instructions?
Thanks
billy

Have 1 side apart now....should the lower steel base parts slide within each other? Not sure if this is how the forward and backward work...mine seems to be rusted together,,,,should these slide free?

Billy,
Yes it should slide back and forth. There is a thin wear piece that is riveted to the top side of the lower track that rusts into pieces and will seize the tracks. I rebuilt one for a friend and ended up using a piece of bandsaw blade to replicate that thin wear strip. If I remember correctly, I had to remove at least two of the studs to slide the upper and lower pieces apart.
Make sure the entire unit is either back in the car or bolted/attached evenly to a piece of plywood before running it back and forth. It is VERY easy to break the pot metal housings that house the gear tracks. Don't ask how I know!!
Good Luck!
Bob
