Hi all,

Background: I am reinstalling my engine after a rebuild. The transmission is in the car resting loosely. The whole front clip is off the car.

Since the rubber motor mount isolators are an eccentric circle I understand this allows adjusting the engine position on the frame.  But the shop manual and the posts in the forum have not been helpful in figuring out exactly what the alignment should be.

I have attached a description of the procedure from the manual which I cannot decipher.

1) What rotational position inside the motor mount cups should the rubber pieces start out in? Should they push the motor up, down, left, or right? level or tilted? Or do you just play with the adjustment to ensure the engine and transmission alignment is true? In the image, it APPEARS that the meat of the rubber goes UP and the hollow part goes DOWN.

2) The manual also says to use some sort of cement. What would you use? There doesn’t appear to have been any type of glue in there before although I’m not positive they were original.

thanks!

Forgot to mention that the motor mount isolators I bought already have the threaded stud and serrated “washer” installed. I presume that’s the “inner cup?”

Hmmm....They usually find center when the engine is installed. You could do a test fit, mark the cylinders and apply 3M 1300L or similar adhesive. Once installed I don't think they can pop out . Install the engine and tranny and fit to the trans. cross member. You can do some measuring, but a string from the front crank shaft to the rear axle might help with the center line. These engines are 1-1/2'' off center or so for the steering box. I have some pics of a 383B in a 1957 frame.

The engine went in with the rubber insulator aligned as shown in the illustation: The inner cup, or hollow part, at the bottom.
