My 56 Dodge D500 Custom Royal has the 12" x 2.5" drum brakes that were also on the 56 Windsor (and ??). I've had to correct some work that the shop did a year or so ago (they didn't lube the center plane shoes in the grove between the center plain guide plates). So I've had the brake drum off and the shoes off. I've got things back together and now I need to adjust the brakes again. I have the 56 Dodge manual but it doesn't have the center plane brakes. I also have the 57 Dodge manual which does have the center plane brakes but their adjustment directions (literally direction) is different than what I have.

I am hoping that somebody has a 56 Chrysler manual and can scan and post a diagram that shows the correct directions for adjusting the front shoes in and out. (I have it figured out, I just want a piece of paper to slip into the manuals for future reference).

Two screen captures from the video. Looks to me like the adjustment cam can be turned either direction from full in to full out.

I'm surprised no one else has commented . . .

It has been my experience that the adjusters can be rotated 360 degrees, and will therefor adjust the brake shoes in either direction.

New shoes on a new or newish drum may not allow complete rotation however.

For the sake of uniformity (and subsequent technician sanity) I always oriented the adjusters upwards, so that once assembled the brakes would be consistently adjusted by rotating out and down.

Thanks Gregg. Like you say, the adjustment can probably be made in either direction.

I played around with the brakes some yesterday using the information from the video and then confirmed and finalized the adjustment today. Turned with the forward direction of the wheel to push the shoe out, lock the drum and then backed off a bit, then repeated on the other side. Very touchy adjustment. But I think I've got it okay. I'll see tomorrow.

I need to find an adjustment wrench like the one in the video. Where is Sears when you need them?

It's tomorrow and I "saw". Cured the brake issue, i.e., grabbing on/locking even just backing out of the garage. Solution was to lube the shoes where they contact/are inside the guide plates with white lithium grease (didn't have "Lubriplate" per se) - and then re-adjust the those (left front) brake shoes. Right or wrong, I was more generous with the white lithium grease than they were.

I actually don't need more info on how to adjust the center plane brakes on my 56 Dodge D500, however, since I just acquired the 1946 -1959 Mopar Replacement Parts and Service Guide, I thought I should scan
the pertinent pages and post them into this thread for future reference:

Try a 11mm six-point socket.
