Anyone know offhand if the trany from a 58 DeSoto 361 will interchange with a 57 341? I've got the engine and trany from a 58 and was wondering if I can use the transmission on my 57 Fireflite project.

My old Hollander interchange shows that most torqueflites ( less converter and bell housing ) from 57 thru 61 ( including some trucks ) will interchange as a complete unit. You will have to be careful about using a light duty unit in a heavier duty application. There are several variations of clutches and valve bodies through the years. Some of the early 57
transmissions had a different shift cable design.

DeSoto's are not my expertise to know gear ratios etc
but as far as bolt-up compatibility, the bell housing bolt pattern is different between the 361 and the early Hemi's.
swap out the bell housing (4 bolts) and you should be good on everything else to have a functional transmission installed

They will physically interchange but isn't the '57 air-cooled? If swapping a '58 liquid-cooled into a '57 you'd need to provide a cooler or use the '57 torque converter and connect the external cooler fittings together.

Air cooled have short lives.

Dave, I have two liquid cooled '57 New Yorker Torqueflites if you are interested. One is from a running 42k mile car and one is from a non-running 92k (possibly 192k?) car. I only moved the 42k mile car under its own power a few times, but it went into 1st, 2nd, and Reverse without any issues at all, although the ebrake was not working well. These transmissions are both complete with torque converter / flywheel ring. One shifter cable was cut for removal, but I still may have enough parts to get one shifter operational. I believe all '50s Chrysler and Desoto V8s will interchange in regards to transmissions. I am certain the bellhousing and crankshaft bolt patterns are the same, and I believe all other critical measurements are the same too.
