Veteran Posts: 157 Location: Central New York | Hello fellow FLers. I'm in need of your vast experience with this next project. I'm installing an electronic ignition conversion on the 61 Belv. I'm sure most of you have done this, but this is my first one and i want to do it right. ( no explosions or fires ) I've already purchased the Mopar kit with orange box. It has instructions but I'd like to hear about other folks experience and installation tips. I'm upgrading the voltage regulator as well but I don't know how to wire it in the new system. (still has the old original). Any and all help or assistance would be greatly appreciated. I consider myself still a newbie.

I make and sell this: http://www.designed2drive.com I am not sure which box version you have. The 5 pin version wiring diagram looks like this (Dual Ballast diagram.jpg) Attachments ---------------- Dual Ballast diagram.jpg (68KB - 1294 downloads)

Veteran Posts: 157 Location: Central New York | Thanks Powerflite, I have the 4 pin single ballast system purchased from Mopar. How does the new voltage regulator get wired in ? I'm getting rid of the original which has different wire connectors on it. The new one has a 2 pin plug connector.

Veteran Posts: 157 Location: Central New York | this is the part that's confusing. It's a single ballast so it's not like the 5-pin schematic, and I don't know what you mean my power wire. Do I have to buy or make the 2 wire connector for the regulator ? the new one I have didn't come with it.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 9604 Location: So. Cal | You can purchase the connector. Ebay is one source. Just wire up the alternator part in the diagram and ignore the rest. The blue line will go to the "splice" point on the 4 pin diagram.

Expert Posts: 3768 Location: NorCal | Be aware that the voltage regulator pictured only works with the '70 and later "dual field" alternator. If the alternator is the earlier single field style, the blue "IGN" terminal on the regulator is ignition RUN power.

Expert 5K+ Posts: 8443 Location: Perth Australia | The voltage reg wiring is not required to make the ignition work, its just a "T" off on the ignition wire That particular alternator is not dual field, its just not internally earthed like the earlier ones. The earlier alternators have ignition (blue) going into the regulator, then out to the F terminal on the alternator and grounded internally The one pictured above is exactly the same except it has a field + and field - terminals and the green wire (field -) goes up to the reg They are both "Ignition run" wires, the brown dotted wire is the ignition bypass wire, used to bypass the ballast during cranking Personally, I don't understand why anyone still uses the old mopar type electronic ignition. They were troublesome when new, lots of extra wiring and extra stuff mounted in the engine bay. Distributors with inbuilt ignition modules are far neater, just (if not better) as reliable and if you really want, you can get ones with the coil built into the cap (I think I saw that style) I prefer the coil outside the cap though

Veteran Posts: 157 Location: Central New York | The alt. I'm using is a dual field from a '72 Challenger, the motor is a '64, and Belvy is a '61. I'm going to be working on it this weekend. I really appreciate everyone's help and input, especially the diagrams. That's one of the reasons I'm glad I joined this network. Electrical is not my strong suit, I'm more nuts and bolts, but I think I can do this. Thanks again. Phil.

Veteran Posts: 157 Location: Central New York | The harness on the car has 3 terminals. The battery stud, a brown ground , and a green field. Will I have to run another wire from the the other field terminal on the alt to the regulator ?
