I'm trying to figure out what thread is used to mount the push button bezel on a '57-'58 Chrysler or DeSoto. Underneath the aluminum trim panel, there are 2 screws that mount the outer bezel to the main housing. What thread size are those screws? All of my cars have either the wrong screws in there or are missing altogether. One bezel was even glued on. I can put a 6-32 screw most of the way into it, but it stops near the end and won't go further. A 4-40 is too small to work but goes all the way through. Is the proper thread on this an odd sized 5-40 or is it 6-32, but not threaded the whole way to make it stop near the end? The fact that all my cars have it screwed up, leads me to believe it is a difficult-to find screw. Also, according to what I can measure, it looks like the screws for the aluminum panel are #2 x 1/4" long. Does that agree with what you have found?

I think I answered my own question. I have a gauge surround off the car and found that I can insert the 6-32 a short ways into the back end of it, similar to how far it will go from the front end. So it seems that 5-40 is probably the right thread on it. Although I fear that many of my dash surrounds have been abused so much that I will need to use a long screw that is sure to penetrate the full distance. The longest I can find is 1" and seems about the right length for it.

Post a pic of what you are referring to. I just checked my spare cast aluminum bezel. The face has the two very tiny screws that hold the textured faceplate on. Directly below that, the screw that goes through the cast trim and INTO to lower push button bezel is a #10-24 Phillips head machine screw, with an external lock washer attached to the screw. My '58 has this, as well as my '57. The '58 actually looks like it's never been removed. lol
I'm not on a lot but if you have any questions I can help with, PM me. Thanks!
