Finally after 5-plus years I have my '57 DeSoto Fireflite back together... I started my systems check to determine if I had any rebuild gremlins, and other than a few burnt out bulbs everything was going smoothly.

Then I turned on the wipers, and they began smoothly and sped up as I rotated the knob, as they should. Appearing to be functioning correctly I turned them off. but they just kept running.

I looked under the dash and as the switch is turned from running to off the wiper motor changes direction but continues to run like like the "ON" position.

I turned to the '57 DeSoto shop manual that was little help. Anybody have experience with this that can point me in the right direction?

Thanks for any assistance you can give me, Mark

Did you have arms on it, if not, it might just need a bit of "working resistance" so it doesn't run past the park position

The motor was in the park position, until I turned it on. now it just stays running.. I can get the blades to stop running by positioning the switch between on and off position, but that's not a solution and the blade stay wherever they are when you turned the switch into that position and never go to park.

Make sure both the motor and the switch are properly earthed, also, do you have the foot operated switch?

That switch may also be faulty (or wired wrong) The foot switch is easily taken out of the circuit if you have one

At the risk of giving unneeded information (and embarrassing myself again) all wiper motors have a built in park circuit otherwise the blades would stop on the windshield where you turned them off at. This circuit supplies power until the blades reach the park position. So in your case for some reason (the not being used for some time goblin monsters) the park "ramp" inside the motor is stuck in the on position or in the re-assembly that circuit is getting continuous power from somewhere.

Okay I ran ground wires to the motor and switch but that made no difference... I believe the blue wire on the switch goes to the park switch on the motor... (maybe?) think I am going to test the different leads from the switch next with a multimeter. There are red-yellow-Black-blue wires going from the switch to the motor.

Ray fortunately I’ve reached that age where I stop worrying about embarrassing myself, and no matter how much I know there’s always another car guy out there who will say I don’t know s#*t. ??

I think you’re on to something Ray it may be something stuck in the motor... although I read in one manual to not disassemble the motor without the motor in the park position or damage will occur... catch 22? Perhaps?

The parking switch is broken or frozed due to hardened grease. Remove the motor and open the cover over the reduction gear carefully - if the lid don't come off, mount all screws and run the motor a tad bit and try again.
If lucky, you could wash off the hardened grease and apply some new - if not, you need to drill out the center rivet slightly and then separate the switch from the cover. Drill out the two rivets that holds the switch to he adjusting plate, open up the switch and see if the bakelit lever is broken - if not, just Clean Everything, apply new grease and mount the switch with screws instead of rivets. The center pivot must be threaded and mounted with a screw as well.

Wizard your the man!
To quote Garth and Wayne: [bowing down] "We're not worthy! We're not worthy! We're not worthy! We're scum! We suck! ..."

To quote the wizard: "he parking switch is broken or frozen due to hardened grease."
To quote the old guy (me): "So in your case for some reason (the not being used for some time goblin monsters) the park "ramp" inside the motor is stuck"
Close, .....considering it was a guess, .......but I'm very humble to be in the company of real greatness !

IF it has one, also check the foot operated Wash/Wiper,, As Maybe the foot wiper switch is shorting giving a constant live feed, ,

IF it doesnt have a foot operated wiper/Wash pedal .. then Ignore me and go with what Sven ( wizard) says,,

Okay, It sounds like I have some work to do... I appreciate all the comments and advice and will post back once I dig in further.
Hopefully my next post will not be in the "Parts Wanted" section.

It does have the foot operated Wash/Wipe switch although that was the first thing I removed, and the problem remained.
I left it disconnected until I discover the root of my problem.

WOW, I had the same problem with my ex-1960 Polara when I was using it as a daily driver in the 1970s. The wipers would not shut off unless I played with the switch, as you say - between the off and on positions and I had to do that when the blades were close to the parked position. And this ONLY happened when the weather was rainy and wet, of course!! When the weather dried up the system would return to normal. I suspect some kind of a short in the parking system caused by the dampness, in my case.

No Ian, it was most probably the stop switch bakelite arm that had a crack that opened up due to the force from the wiper blades in combinison with moisture affecting the stop switch contacts.
My '60 Saratoga had exactly the same behaivior as your Polara - no parking in rain, perfect parking in dry weather.

I opened up my motor and checked everything, but the problem proved to be the the broken switch lever, dirty contacts and dryed out grease.
After that all was clened up and mounted together, the motor parks just fine in all conditions.

I finally found the time to get the motor out from under the dash, and like most projects it mushroomed into disassembling more than I planned to.

With the wiper motor on the bench, I opened it up and it had its share of dried and crusty grease.

The internal components were relatively simple and easy to figure out.

I determined the cam attached to the switch was not moving as the motor reversed direction. It is a pretty light spring that engages the cam.
After cleaning all the old grease out, I re-lubricated the gears with white lithium grease, reassembled and bolted back in the car.
everything worked perfectly.

Thanks again for everyones advice.

When i buy an old car the first thing i do is to lubricate ALL parts that require lubrication, the wiper motor, mechanism and linkage belong to them. heck, these are 60, S-I-X-T-Y year old low price cars. running them until something breaks is not very wise. one of the great things about these wonderful cars is that the various mechanical and even electrical items still can be completely disasembled and serviced.

My '62 NY wagon had the same problem during last years Check-up.
I was able to reach under the dash locate the wiring and connector leading to the wiper motor and disconnect it so I could drive home.

If you kept your old motor, go through it, and clean it up. Then you could swap it back in...or at the very least have a backup on the shelf.
