M'Lisa Batey Fowlie
December 31, 2017 at 8:37am ·
It is with a heavy heart that John Fowlie and I announce the passing of his father, Elmore Fowlie, and his sister Carolin Maples on December 26th. It has been a hell of a month. First they lost there home in the Thomas Fire and then they caught influenza that turned into pneumonia. They passed within half an hour of each other,

John and I came down to move his mother into a house they had rented before they got sick.

I've been wondering about John and family members during the fires and just tried to contact him this past Friday and when He didn't return my call I had that deep feeling we all get sometimes that there maybe something wrong. A very tragic happening such as the loss of family members is one thing and when combined with the fires the pressure is on. Only those that have experienced this actually know the feeling. With my heart felt sympathy I just like to express my condolences to John and his family at this time.

Yes, this is what I was referring to. I just didn't want to tell the story in respect to their privacy. I also know there are those who would want to keep them in their prayers right now.
I don't know yet, where John's sister lived. He has relatives in , I think, Michigan. I will find out......................................MO

My thoughts are with you and your family John. You're good folks and I'm sad to read this, that's a real rough blow. The thomas fire is no joke.. the largest in CA state history.

John told me about the fire taking his parents' home when I saw him 12/7, but had no idea about the rest. Our thoughts are with his family. My wife and I are down with the flu right now, despite getting flu shots, and it is not fun.

My family lived in Ventura, which is 400 miles south of me.

My mother and father were each near 90 years old, and my sister was living with them, taking care of them.

December 4th, the Thomas fire raced across the landscape, pushed by 60 MPH winds, and covered ten miles in about an hour. My sister and niece had to help my folks out in order to evacuate late that night, and luckily they were able to make it out with their dogs, and the clothes on their back. Nothing was left afterwards, house, contents, cars , etc.

They moved into a motel afterwards, where I and M'lisa visited them a little over a week ago. Dad was upbeat, saying he'd be looking forward to drawing up new plans for a custom house, and rebuilding. We invited them to come to Williams, where we would cook a nice dinner for Christmas.

A couple days before the holiday, my sister texted me saying everyone had the flu, and wouldn't be visiting. Dad and my sister were put in the Intensive care unit on Christmas day, and they both passed away the next day.

We've been away helping my niece and mom deal with the whole situation, and getting them into a rental home to start over, as well as to sift through the rubble to possibly find a keepsake spared by the flames.

---John

I lost both of my parents unexpectedly, and within a month of each other, a few years ago. I can't imagine compounding that with the loss of their home.

God bless you and your family, and may you find the strength to get through this tough time.

This flu sounds pretty scary. I've heard of a lot of people really struggling with it. Today on the news, there is a young firefighter who fought the Thomas fire who is in the hospital because of the flu. It would be a good idea for people to get a flu shot to at least increase their chances with this thing.

So sorry to hear this very tragic news John. Very shocking and unexpected (obviously). With someone's mention of a Thomas firefighter now down with this "flu", I am starting to wonder just what that smoke actually contained.

In any event, I hope that you and M'lisa can get through this and continue to help your Mom and niece.

Terrible. Can't imagine it.

So very sorry, John. I haven't been on here much lately, and this is the first I've heard of your tragedy. I fully understand the significance of losing a parent and a sibling so closely together- Mom and brother in '82. We had been worried about our son in San Jose, but here in the midwest the detailed news of the fires was slim and far between.
The most sincere wishes and prayers for you, M'lisa, your Mom and niece!
