Came across this thread on the restoration of a low mile 59 Plymouth sedan in India. Supposedly the car only has 3000 miles on it. It also has a unique looking dashboard that looks nothing like a US 59 Plymouth; is that a Diplomat dash and instrument cluster?

That is a 1958 Dodge instrument panel.

Really interesting to see the restoration. Looks like they are doing a pretty decent job.

The frame is odd. The 6cyl cars I've had did not have such large mounts that connected to two cross members. They had mounts in the same area as the V8 mounts that angled forward. Welded only to the larger engine cross member.

I bet this car being built for export maybe came from Canada. They used the larger Chrysler Flat 6. So the frame mount is maybe different for that reason.

Ian has it right; that is a 1957-58 Dodge dashboard. It's set up for driving on the wrong side of the road  RHD the Indians kept from the English. :-D It looks like these Indian mechanics are doing a very good job of restoring a rare export model, although it appears to have some nasty rust in the rear glass area. Let's hope their metal fabrication skills are up to the task. ;-

I don't think that is rust. It looks like they may have welded in a different car window over the back of it when the rear window was broken. Looks like the restoration is mostly done.

I lived in Pakistan for four and a half years and saw some copies of old newspaper ads for a dealership in Karachi, but I don't think I ever saw so much as the carcass of an old Chrysler product there. I saw a Barracuda, a Challenger, an R-body Gran Fury, and a few Fargo trucks in Egypt though. I also saw what appeared to be a couple of late '60s D500 trucks abandoned in the Sinai. I saw a '68-'70 AMX at a gas station in Chiang Mai, Thailand, back in 2010. That was an odd sight there.

Must admit that I thought this was a joke - but, it seems like those guys really know what they're doing. They have absolutely no idea of safety and protection though

This is the picture I was basing my commet on about the rust in the back window channel, but I see from closer examnation that the rusty car was a 1959 Dodge Custom Lancer(?) that the body man was comparing the 1959 Plymouth to as the body stampings were similar. The 1959 Plymouth appears to be in much better shape.

Well browsing through thread again, it looks like this isn't their only FL vehicle. I spy a 55/56 RHD Dodge wagon in one of the pics, as well as a LHD Desoto convertible that I am not familiar with (Can anyone shed some light on what that is?). Last post was on the 27th and its got new tires and waiting on small trim pieces and moldings to be complete.

That is an export DeSoto Diplomat Custom convertible. Basically a Plymouth with a grille that is similar to the DeSoto grille of that year. The Plymouth model number for the Belvedere convertible was P25-3, while the DeSoto Diplomat Custom was SP25-3. The first Plymouth-based export DeSoto was built in 1938 and started using the Diplomat name with the 1949 models (SP17 and SP18). The 1957-1959 DeSoto Diplomats used the Firesweep front clip.

The final Diplomats were built in 1960 and 1961 and were Dodge Darts with side trim based on the trim used on 1957 DeSotos. No special grilles - just the basic Dart unit.

These Plymouth-based DeSotos were sold across the world, with the exception of Canada and the U.S. The Plymouth-based export DeSoto and its Dodge equivalent, the Kingsway, were even sold in Hawaii before it became a state of the USA as Hawaii was considered export territory.

Chrysler also built a DeSoto Truck for export, based on the Dodge Truck. Chrysler of Turkey continued to build DeSoto Trucks into the 1980's and when local Turkish businessmen purchased the Turkish subsidiary from Chrysler, they continued to build DeSoto trucks even to this day.

Chrysler in Great Britain also built DeSoto Trucks after the war based on British-designed Dodge Trucks. The British Chrysler firm was combined with Rootes when Chrysler purchased that firm which became Chrysler United Kingdom in 1970. Chrysler's European operations were sold to Peugeot-Citroen in 1979 and for 1980 the Talbot name was adopted for the former European Chrysler products.
