I'm getting ready to install my stainless windshield trim on my 1956 Imperial, it just hooks onto a channel in the rubber. The original windshield didn't have any sealer of any kind to prevent leakage, but I don't think the aftermarket gaskets are as good. Should I seal it or try without and touch up later?

Also, the weatherstripping is supposed to "lock" together all the way around, but some areas tend not to do so. I was going to glue these areas closed, what kind of glue should I use? I've attached pictures of the "unlock" stripping.

i think there is nasty windshield sealant, search on amazon?

insert at top first is what I saw from the factory installs... use a cord around the sides and bottoms.

Where did you get the windshield gasket ? The one on my 55 Desoto is toast.

mikes2nd - I have some non-drying/non-hardening windshield sealant made by 3M. It is black and was recommended to me by someone quite some time ago. The car didn't have any such sealant on from the factory, so I'm wondering if I'd just be wasting my time. I was hoping there would be people on here with experience in this area. If I had two people respond saying they replaced the windshield gasket with no sealant and they had no leaks, I wouldn't use the sealant.

ronbo97 - It's been a while since I bought the gasket, but I believe it was a Andy Bernbaum piece.

I just checked Bernbaum's catalog and I don't see it. I'm planning to get mine from Steele Rubber. I've heard good things about their product.

Looks like you have a similar problem with seal alignment. A glass installer with thirty years experience installed my windshield and rear glass, and the rear would not lock properly. He shimmed inside the glass channel so the groove aligned with the sheet metal. Once he did that, the seal locked properly. I would not try to glue the parts together.

The installer did not use a sealant anywhere and recommended I not use any unless a leak developed.

FWIW, I had a terrible time getting the rear glass stainless trim to fit, but your seal looks different than mine, so it might not be a concern. I found a youtube video of that operation on a '56 Desoto Adventurer, so you might find it to see if it's similar to your Imperial.

My issue with seal alignment looked a lot like yours. I chose not to use a sealant because it's not standard practice and I figured there is probably a reason for that. In my case, I got it fixed by a windshield replacement technician at Handy Auto Glass by my home in Miami. I also asked him about window channel rust and he felt it was best prevented with a good rust primer under the paint. He also advised not painting under where the urethane adhesive attaches to the windshield and instead using a urethane primer on the bare metal. He said it increases the structural strength of the windshield installation.

to me its two birds with one stone...

no leaks and it will never rust for 50 years. Our cars will see rain but hopefully not salt and these seals wick water in that area, esp in the back. I will also guarantee I wont be fighting a window leak(which they often did). the "how to stop these darn cars from leaking" dealer supplements mention window seal sealant. I am using a good epoxy primer on the bare metal.

the factory was happy if the windshield was leak free for 5 years, after that why they would care? I will do apply sealer it if the car was mine, specially if is a 3M product with reproduction rubber.
How would you feel if after the car is 100% complete you find a damp carpet? Better safe than sorry they say, if you apply sealer it wont leak for sure.

I did end up pumping some 3M glass bedding compound between the gasket and the body and also between the gasket and glass. The compound tightened up the fit and most of the channel now locked. There are a few areas that could be better, so I was going to double check those areas.
