Maybe. The intent of the neutral safety switch is to prevent you from starting the engine unless the transmission is in neutral. There are ways around that but they aren't safe.

Which car/engine? I can try looking up the PN etc. if it is a 55-58 Mopar

56 Chrysler Windsor. My book calls it a neutral starter switch. Should be the same.

PN 1704 283. Common across the board for Autotrans cars (Plymouth, Dodge,Desoto 55-58 and Chrysler 55-57) and maybe beyond. See parts listing below.

Several options available on eBay:

https://www.ebay.ca/sch/i.html?_from=R40&_trksid=p2380057.m570.l1313...

If you are desparate and very careful, you can bypass the neutral safety switch by putting a short wire on the appropriate terminal of the four terminal starter solenoid and grounding the other wire. I am running that way until I get/take the time to replace the switch on the side of the Powerflite transmission.

My transmission and neutral safety switch:

The NSS provides a path to ground through the internal shift lever (rooster comb); in the pic below the switch/lever combo on the far left is the pre-'64. With a meter hooked to the threaded stud there should be continuity through the switch to the spring-loaded plunger on the opposite end of the switch whether or not the plunger is depressed.

It's actually pretty rare to find one that doesn't work, the usual reason for replacement is fluid leakage where the metal housing crimps onto the threaded stud insulator.

56 Chrysler Windsor. My book calls it a neutral starter switch. Should be the same.

Some cars used the Neutral shift button to activate the starter, "start" switch would be different than "safety" switch. These cars also had a vacuum "safety" switch to prevent the starter from engaging -if the Neutral button was pushed once the engine was running.

Confusing terminology.

I agree. I would interpret a " neutral starter switch" to be the one mounted on the trans push button housing. They frequently fail because they are "hard wired" and the wires fall off!

Easy way to tell. How do you start your car? By turning the key or by pushing the neutral push button?
