"Make reasonable offer, but any low ballers will be ignored."

Umm...don't give us a clue about what is "reasonable" and what is "low ball". Doomed to failure.

Probably just a crotchety old man. See the Impala sedan beside it? "You can become completely invisible in that car." Drive. The movie, Gossling.

"Doomed to failure"???? What's that supposed to mean? Lack of price or explanation of "reasonable offer" shouldn't stop an interested party in reaching out to the owner.

I gotta chime in here. Like most of us I go through Craigslist pretty regularly, and this ad is EXACTLY the kind of bass-ackwards laziness that just irritates the poop outa me.

First off, don't put $1 as your listing price unless that's your expected minimum offer. When you sort CL by price you get dozens of ads from morons who think putting $1, or $20, or whatever, will somehow entice someone to decide "Hey - I've only got $2000 to spend, but since you listed your vehicle for $20 I'll be glad to pay $20,000 for it". Do these nit-wits not have a "0" key, or are they just too darn lazy to put in the whole number?

Second, if you don't know what something is worth, figure it out. How hard is it - even for something unusual, to search the internet, CL, Ebay, etc, to get some idea of value? If you leave it up to the buyer to determine value don't piss and moan about what they offer. Don't demand "reasonable" - I think $1000 is a perfectly reasonable offer for this car, but I'm betting the lazy jack-a** that owns it thinks it's worth tens-of-thousands.

And last, while not in this ad, don't tell the "scammers" your not interested. Uh, is anyone interested? Do you seriously think someone intent on scamming you is gonna read that and think "Gee - THIS guys on the up-and-up, I'll just pass him by"

This ad is a perfect example of an ad I'd look at, be mildly interested in, and never follow up because this individual is clearly an idiot, and not worth the time for so little as a text.

Thanks Gregg. I agree with everything you said to explain what I meant by "doomed to failure". Craigslist is bad enough without having the potential buyer have to guess where he needs to be, i.e. above a "low ball" and not too much more than "reasonable".

(I've got one of my cars (93 Audi S4 turbo quattro sports sedan) on Craigslist at the moment - with a clearly stated price, and even then the responses (if any) are mostly laughable.

I use CL quite a bit - both selling and buying.

Like most people I've run across my fair share of questionable individuals. But for the most part people are on the up-and-up, even if you run across a strange one once in a while.

A few years ago I sold a Dodge Magnum on CL. It was an R/T, nicely optioned, low mileage, and looked it. I listed it at an appropriate number for it's condition. After a couple of weeks I got so tired of idiots emailing me "Hey - I can give you $5000 in cash - will you take it?" that I started saying "Sure - meet me at this address on Saturday at noon" and provided the street address for the local township police department two townships over. I figured if they were stupid enough to drive an hour up from the city chasing their asinine offer they'd get the message when they got to the address.

Since then it's become SOP to meet at the local PD, so it's not a good joke anymore. :P

Gregg, in this case yes, but not always.

I hate selling stuff but I have a complete 1956 270 poly engine (side motor mounts) that I would like to sell, I have spent the last two weeks searching the net to set a "fair price" and maybe help someone out (unrealistic ?) , .......so far absolutely nothing other then some very high priced exhaust manifolds. I am about as anally stubborn as they come and have looked so I will eventually just pick my price or not list it at all!

This guy is a dreamer and time waster. I've been in contact. I ask several questions he just replies to one. Ignores the question about price. I had to keep emailing each question one at a time.

It needs brakes and the body has rust. He can't provide any more photos. I asked for the price 4 times and finally just sent a message that said PRICE? He is "taking offers at this time" which is the biggest waste of time.

He's hoping someone will just offer some stupid high price for something he probably has little to nothing in. Why don't people put a price on things? EVERYONE knows what they want for something...cut the crap and put a price on it. If its too high then you'll end up keeping it...if its too low and it sells...then great! Why does everyone have to try and get the top dollar for everything? If you made money and you're happy with the deal...then what difference does it make? If you don't know what its worth...then tough s**t... figure it out or just make a price.

The "make an offer" game is just stupid. I sure as hell wouldn't want people blowing up my phone and wasting my time thinking they can get something I want $6000 for for $500 because I don't list a price....

I offered him $1000 and he hasn't replied. I think $1000 is fair for a rusty paint brushed car with no title. Why hasn't he replied? He has a price right there in his stupid head that he wants but thinks if he doesn't list a limiting price someone might offer more!!

It is true that for some items it can be hard to find a comparable.

But there are resources.

Have you asked here what a fair value might be? Or another enthusiast website where that engine would be known?

And in truth I suspect you have a pretty good idea what the value is.

Too often I find sellers unwilling to name a price because they're afraid they might pick a number lower than what a buyer would offer, and god forbid they leave a few dollars on the table. Or even worse find out the buyer re-sold the item at a profit.

Frankly this mentality is part of what's ruining this hobby.

Not everything is worth a million dollars. And not every sale has to garner top dollar.

I've sold plenty of things that I later found out was potentially worth much more or someone resold for a profit. Who cares? I was content with the deal then....what difference does it make now?

Everyone is trying to just get the absolute top crazy darn dollar these days. Cant be a penny short on potential money intake! Even better when they have no knowledge whatsoever on what they are trying to sell...

Its a waste of time for everyone. Make a price and people will know what you want for it. But then you get the idiots trying to sell 1976 Valiants for $26,000....
